I enjoy working collaboratively and creatively with my clients. I am enthusiastic about the power of the therapeutic process and its ability to transform the human condition. Utilizing a holistic and eclectic approach, I primarily employ Client-Centered Therapy in counseling sessions and incorporate evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy along the way.
My 11 years of experience in clinical counseling has been influenced by a multicultural and social justice perspective and has involved helping children, adolescents, and adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings to successfully address histories of trauma, depression and anxiety, concerns centered on identity and self-esteem, substance use and chemical dependence, crisis management, and interpersonal conflict among others.
The genuine and empathic posture I take in our work, along with the supportive, non-judgmental, and safer space I aim to offer you, will assist us in identifying your strengths and inner resources while examining the problems and distress you are experiencing. I endeavor to help you increase self-esteem, facilitate personal development, and evoke the discovery of answers and solutions necessary for your progress.
Additionally, I will aid you in cultivating greater insight and awareness through the exploration of your thoughts and feelings, guide you in creating effective strategies to manage the situations that have brought you to counseling, and promote movement toward healing and growth.

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for John Asuncion. We don’t pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.
John is wonderful! I started seeing John during a time of distress and he gave me some fantastic tools to get through it. I've continued working with him because I can see the benefits in my relationships with myself and others. Whether I've had a good week or a challenging one, our sessions always leave me feeling more positive about my mental health journey and life in general.
John has been incredibly helpful in supporting me and creating a space for me to process. I look forward to our continued work together!
John is incredible!!
I have only just begun my counseling experience with John and I can't stress enough how engaged and compassionate he is! I feel as though Better Help's ability to match me with someone who will be a great tool in my healing journey was spot on! Can't recommend him enough!
John is incredibly professional, caring, and helpful. He is so patient. Most notably, he is willing to make subtle changes when a particular technique or communication style isn’t as effective for me. I’m so glad to be working with him.
I look forward to every session I have with John. His main focus for our sessions long term and short term is to learn how I can live a richer and more fulfilling life. I appreciate that it’s not necessarily about finding the immediate answers, but rather looking at life and our journeys holistically.
What I find the most helpful is his empathy and understanding of the layers and complexities that make up me, my upbringing, my issues and my desires in life. He understands racial and identity issues, which saves me a lot of time and energy to not have to exhaustingly explain. If you’re struggling today, I’m sure John can help you out!
John is fantastic! He is able to hold a mirror up so you can look at yourself and examine parts of you that you may not have seen. He is extremely supportive in your self-discovery journey and helps with your growth every step of the way.
I came to John after a truck plowed into our stationary SUV killing my husband and leaving me with broken bones and a brain injury. It was hard for me to think, speak, sleep, eat, and I felt stuck in a repeating loop in which I viewed the accident over and over. John helped me stop that fairly quickly, and we have worked for not quite a year on how to live with loss and injury, and he has been essential to my recovery.
Over the past several months, John has helped me work on my struggles with anxiety as well as helped me focus on building my confidence—finding better ways to speak to myself and understand my strengths rather than focusing on my weaknesses. After a few years of setbacks, it's great to have someone in your corner that approaches me with compassion while also speaking from experience. I've recommended him to friends of mine and look forward to continuing to work with him to establish better boundaries and expectations for myself as well as navigate future trials and triumphs with the tools he's given me.
John is very understanding and helps give me clarity and support during these troubling times.
I’ve only had two sessions but already so glad I have John as a counselor! I’ve seen progress in my mood already!
John is a great listener and knows exactly what to point out to provoke thoughts about what it is the conversation is about. He is wonderful in creating a comfortable space in which to discuss matters in your personal life or things you would normally not talk about. I am very happy when my appointment time comes because I enjoy my conversations with him.
John has totally changed my perspective on therapy. In only a few sessions, he has brought patience, compassion, and a sense of peace that has been transposed onto my traditional judgment of myself. He is excellent.
John's diligence in learning about his clients really shines as he simultaneously gives advice while also console. Anyone would be lucky to have John as their BetterHelp counselor.
John has helped me see things from a different perspective. He really listens and responds with helpful questions and insights. I look forward to our sessions.
John provided me with some very helpful feedback on my anxiety issues. He's patient and attentive to what I say. This was my first experience with counseling, and I was surprised by how comfortable I was sharing my thoughts and worries with John.
I leave every conversation with John feeling absolutely refreshed, confident, and ready to continue thriving.
He is very calm, very patient, and a very careful listener. He will really do a great job of finding the important pieces in why you say, and expand on them in a meaningful way. Things that will sort of slip out without thinking much of them, but when we explore them together a bit further, we come to revelations that help a ton.
John is exactly what I was looking for without knowing what I was looking for. I'm grateful for him every day. He really thinks about what I say and devises specific-to-me plans for working through things. I really feel supported. His warm, soothing praise and encouragement feels totally genuine and really helps me open up in a way I haven't with other counselors. He inspires me to do more to help myself. I believe in him.
John is a great listener and knows what to talk about to help you through your issues. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone who, at the very least, needs a sympathetic ear.
He has been extremely professional and has been there to help me begin to overcome my anxiety and self-esteem issues. He is very good at listening and really understanding your concerns.
John always responds with timely sensitive, and positive feedback.
John is a great person to talk to. He listens intently, he’s supportive and encouraging, he moves at a pace you’re comfortable with. And just overall an outstanding counselor! I really enjoy my time talking with him and I feel as if he really helps to put things into a healthier perspective!
