I began in this field by getting a Masters’ Degree in Music Therapy and became a Board-Certified Music therapist (MT-BC). However, early in my career, I found I was doing mostly verbal therapy and then took a 3-year certification training in Gestalt Therapy which taught me how to effectively do verbal therapy. Over the years, I have used an eclectic approach, depending on the present needs of the clients I was working with – using CBT or insight therapy, Gestalt or Music therapy or other modalities and of course, Client Centered therapy. I believe that ultimately all therapists, even behaviorists are Rogerian because without establishing a strong relationship with the client, little change will occur. In the past few years, I have also been using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which I find to be closely related to Gestalt Therapy – both take a humanistic approach to therapy and both focus on the here and now (incorporating mindfulness and other present centered orientations) and both emphasize getting out of our heads and into our lives.
I became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2003 and over my career have worked with many different people (18 and above) dealing with many different problems and have worked in many different settings – doing individual as well as group therapy and couples therapy as well as psychoeducational approaches, like anger management, communication skills training, and grief counseling.

Dr. Berns has helped me gain an insightful healthy new perspective on anger- a stigma that I’ve held true for years that many therapists before him could not achieve to break.
