Welcome to BetterHelp Therapy. I'm John Brill, LICSW-LCSW-IBHC, and I look forward to assisting you along your life journey. As your social worker, I am looking simply to help you learn and grow as the person you want to be.
I hope you’ll find that our sessions provide a warm, nonjudgmental atmosphere where you can speak freely about yourself and your experiences. The feedback I provide will give you insight into what is troubling you. My treatment is primarily person-centered and solution-focused. I aim to give you the tools and teach you the skills to solve your problems and be better able to solve future ones independently. I also use cognitive-behavioral therapy/techniques, mindfulness, relaxation and stress reduction to help you make connections, identify triggers, and learn the skills and acquire the tools to make and sustain the changes desired in self.
I pull from a wide knowledge base and have helped diverse clients, including those with mental health diagnoses, those with addictions or dual diagnoses, those with LGBTQ+ issues and/or who are involved in coming out, and those who have survived trauma. Also, I'm a native of the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area and am well-versed in its special stressors and the tools to handle those stressors. And if an issue goes beyond my abilities, I am happy to remain working with you until we find a new therapist to move forward with you.
Seeking help is a scary idea! But facing your problem(s) alongside a trained professional can bring a sense of relief that is its own reward.
I look forward to working with you, and I wish you the very best outcome possible, whether we work together or not.

He's a great listener and comes up with achievable ways to cope with some issues.
John is an empathetic and perceptive counselor. I feel like I'm making progress towards defining my goals, and now, working towards them.
Very prompt and helpful. Gives helpful insight and how to apply solutions to every day life.
John is funny, easy to talk to, and offers sound advice. I feel like I’ve grown as a person in the time I’ve worked with him. Thank you!
John is very laid back and solution-focused. He is also extremely reliable (even when I wasn't) which was such a comfort. I especially appreciated the way he would walk me through how/when to have difficult conversations with my partner and how he held me accountable to self-care standards we set together.
