I have worked in the behavioral health field as a clinical counselor, addictions counselor and behavior analyst since the early 1980s. I hold an MS Degree in Behavior Analysis and Therapy from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and am licensed as a Clinical Counselor by the US State of Idaho. I am a Board Certified Addictions Counselor, Sex Therapist, Trauma Professional, Hypnotherapist and Telemental Health Provider.
Certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT), Hypnotherapy and EMDR, I am well prepared to help people with issues related to current and past traumas. I am comfortable working with people of all ages on issues including mood disorders, substance abuse, anxiety, sexuality issues, relationship issues, grief, parenting struggles, stress management, and poor impulse control.
I am also trained and experienced in the use of hypnosis to help people change the "subconscious" thoughts and motivations that often sabotage our best efforts to bring about change. This can be especially effective in changing long-standing habits like smoking or overeating, but can also be powerful in addressing long-standing trauma issues.
I always keep in mind that the relationship between the client and the counselor represents about 45% of the effectiveness of therapy. My primary approach is known as "Neuroscience Informed Cognitive Behavior Therapy;" this means that I use a brain-based approach to changing thoughts and behaviors. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is generally considered the fastest and most effective form of therapy, because the focus is on the present. I am certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which is a particularly effective form of Cognitive Behavior Therapy, designed to meet the needs of people with particularly difficult issues, such as severe personality disorders, self-harm and addictions.
I am respectful of all beliefs, religious or otherwise, but do not take a spiritual approach to counseling. That is, I will respect your views, but will not try to force my own on you. I will not encourage us to start sessions with a prayer, and I will not tell you to go to church; though I will surely encourage evidence-based practices such as mindfulness meditation.
I am the father of a young a woman with severe developmental disabilities, and have had several "real-world" jobs, such as over-the-road truck driver and police officer. I find this makes it easier for me to "relate" to people.
I enjoy helping people reach their goals and resolve what is bothering them. My goal is to help you develop the skills to be your own therapist. I encourage you to start today to change your life for the better by allowing me to help your through your journey.

John immediately knows what you are trying to say. He knows very well emotions connected to anxiety. I really appreciated the easy mental exercises that he suggested to incorporate throughout the day. They helped me understand the basis behind what I am feeling.

As this is my first experience with online counseling and John is my first counsellor I don't really have anything to compare him to however I think he's great at what he does. He checks in with me regularly which helps as I often forget and he does a mix of sessions and worksheets which has been fun and informative. John has a wealth of experience and always knows what to say. Thanks John and the BetterHelp Team.

This is my first experience with online counseling and John is my first counselor. I have not been as regular as I ought to be, so he initiates contact to check in and remind me he's there. It would be easy for me to blow off treatment if he weren't doing so, so I appreciate that. He reminds me that there are multiple platforms we can use for therapy when I tend to lazily just message at odd hours. He seems to hear what I *mean* even when I don't say it very well and comes back with positive suggestions, articles and resources. He's not pushy about anything, no personal agenda, no objection to whether I mention religious things or not, I really can't think of any constructive criticism at all, much less complaints. Thanks for connecting me with a good therapist, it's made the newness of this kind of therapy very smooth. In my physical location I have no access to therapists at all, so it's been nice to find a distance support system. Thanks again.

John is amazing. Not only he listens to me very well but he gives me 'solutions' to try. Whenever we have a session, he DOES invest his time and effort as much as I want willingly. I am really satisfied with his counseling ways. It is so helpful for me to change my mindset in a positive way and to be a better person. I highly recommend him as a counselor.
