Hello, my name is Jonathan Monroe and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a master’s degree in K-12 School Counseling from Eastern Illinois University. I also have my Educational Staff Associate Certification, and continue to receive professional education and training in psychotherapy and school counseling theories and practices. I offer a genuine, warm, and down-to-earth type of counseling style with an integrative approach to mental health - well established in evidence-based practices such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Focused, Motivational Interviewing, Humanistic, Strength-Based, Existential and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. I utilize an eclectic approach, meaning the work is informed by my training in various modalities of psychotherapy and tailored to the individual.
With over 20 years in the mental health field, my career experiences include; providing outpatient counseling for adults, couples and families with mental health symptoms, and emotional and behavioral issues. I'm currently in private practice, and also contract as a therapist for a counseling group practice. My previous work environments have included settings ranging from in-home, facility-based, community mental health settings, and in school-based placements. I highly value the work and educational experiences I have devoted myself to over the many years, providing me with meaningful opportunities and a genuine connection to empower other individuals to live more meaningful and purposeful lives. My involvement within the social services and academia spaces over the years has taught me how to truly respect and understand the importance of always edifying individuals' diversity, spiritual, moral, social, emotional, and intellectual selves. I have worked with individuals in a variety of counseling and educational capacities. I provide counseling services directed at helping people deal with a variety of challenges related to depression, anxiety, anger, relationship issues, PTSD, sexual orientation and identity issues, work and school concerns, life transitions, self-esteem issues, and family conflict. I use a collaborative approach to counseling, implementing an individuals' goals and value systems. I focus on the life situation of the person, couple, or family, including their successes and challenges as they pursue life goals. I help people to use their personal strengths to find new solutions to life challenges.
My therapeutic style is strength-based, trauma informed and person-centered. The psychotherapy services I provide are interpersonal and collaborative. In my practice, I enjoy working collaboratively with individuals, assisting them in exploring alternative solutions to the issues and concerns that have been causing them problems and distress. I believe it is important that individuals feel comfortable, safe, motivated and confident in our work together. I work with individuals from a place of respect and compassion and believe that real life transformation happens when we place true value on our true experiences and have the perspective lens in which we see and understand ourselves, and the world we live in. I work well with people who feel disconnected in their own emotional, physical, behavioral, spiritual, and relational patterns within the life they are living being hopeful that their path towards personal growth, change, self-awareness and increased well-being will lead them to living lives full of meaning and fulfillment. Being able to help individuals generate new ideas and gain personal insight can help them to explore parts of themselves they are not aware of that can lead to positive healthy emotional and interpersonal functioning.
The personal journey and adventures we encounter throughout our lives will inescapably bring about challenging experiences, especially when we feel alone and disconnected to our inner selves. The human experience can sometimes be tough making it hard to face the problems that seem overwhelming when struggling to have the courage to talk about your life's issues that come with strong personal thoughts, beliefs, and feelings.
As I continue to navigate my own life towards being more willing to grow and change, I find myself making it through the challenges of life feeling more empowered and hopeful, and I desire the same for those I provide counseling to. I thrive on the unique presentations of clients and enjoy the challenge of understanding and connecting with each individual with whom I work with.
