I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with experience in working with couples and individuals. I have been practicing since 2013 and am licensed in California which requires 3000 clinical hours prior to licensure, and am and now licensed in Tennessee as well. I have also been working with BetterHelp since October of 2017.
I have experience working with a variety of issues but specialize in work surrounding stress and trauma. Much of my professional work has been focused on the first responder community where I provided critical incident stress debriefings as well as ongoing one on one therapy. As a result of my experience, I also have extensive experience in working with death, coping and loss.
In addition to my experience as an individual therapist, I ran a depression group that had 4-14 participants, have provided on-going training to first responder and co-developed and presented a course on stress in law enforcement which is taught at a police academy in northern California. I have found that clients achieve the goals they have set for themselves through the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and I have used it often. However, my training is such that I am comfortable adjusting or changing the theoretical orientation to meet your needs. After all, you are the client!
I conduct live sessions (phone, video, live chat) Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during normal business hours Central Standard Time. To assist client looking for sessions after work, I also have Wednesday evenings available. For my perspective California clients, please note that I am 2 hours ahead. Please feel free to take a look at my online calendar to see my availability. Also, we all need time off so having that in mind, it should be noted that I do not check messages on Sundays or major holidays but will respond to any messages left the following day.
Please note that although your BetterHelp subscription continues whether you attend sessions or not, I, as a licensed professional depend on your attendance. If, in the event, that you fail to attend or late cancel (less than 24 hours notice) for 3 sessions, I will be forced to discontinue additional live sessions.
Thank you for taking the time to read a little about me and most importantly, thank you for taking the first step! It can be difficult to take care of ourselves even when everything is going great, reaching out when things are hard is a big step.

Joshua understands me in a way that a therapist must. He is skilled at relating to people, and develops a relationship that opens the gates for progress and growth. I have grown substantially in three months talking with Josh, and would recommend him to anyone.
Josh is present and in the moment in our sessions. His understanding and empathic of my experience have brought meaning during a transitional time in my life.
Been with him for a few months and I can see a pretty good difference in myself. I am greatly appreciative for the support and advice he’s given. Helped me out of a pretty bad place. I’d highly recommend
In the short time I’ve had with Joshua he has opened my eyes to some meaningful things. I look forward to continuing my work with him.
Excellent and insightful counselor.
Joshua Skinner has been completely accommodating to my situation. He's helped me through concerns about my personal and professional life with respect and tact. He understands what issues I've had and has been able to pin-point what I need to do in order to better myself.
Josh has been a great support of the last couple days. Without his support, I wouldn't know where I would be.
Josh is excellent. The dialog is balanced, his examples (almost stories or parables) are spot-on, and he pushes back, without it being at all off-putting. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed working with him.
Joshua is extremely good at seeing the problems and bringing them to light. He gave me the confidence to move forward. I felt like I was in a deep pit and he reached out his hand and pulled me out.
I haven’t had the chance to truly get to know his skills yet but he seems to listen to what I say and offers insightful suggestions.
Josh has been an incredible aid in helping me through a very difficult time which required hard choices to be made, but with Josh I was very confident that I made the correct choice.
Joshua Skinner is a very competent counselor. He listens to your issues and evaluates them and then tries to help. I would definitely recommend him as a counselor.
Joshua is great! I'm very happy he was assigned as my therapist :-)
Joshua is a wonderful counselor. He has been very patient and easy to talk to which has been key. He responds in a timely, thoughtful, manner and is intelligent. While these are the first steps in my path to better mental wellness, I already have more confidence in the success of this attempt than several that have failed in the more traditional counseling system. The Better Help system has been a unique answer to my general anxiety, and is an innovative avenue in which I am able to begin my counseling experience at a level I am most comfortable-- via text.
He is great!!
Joshua has been great to work with. He creates a patient, supportive container which creates a lot of space for my thoughts to come up naturally. He's also skilled at employing a variety of modalities and always seems to know just what to say or just how to respond to my needs.
Josh Skinner is an excellent therapist and very knowledgeable. He provides different methods, resources, etc. to approach one’s problems. He is easy to talk to and trustworthy.
Josh is an amazing therapist and a very true and straight forward person. He understands things very well and will tell you what you need to hear, but in a way that is extremely supportive. Thank you Josh!
Very caring and professional. Helped me open doors of insight to my situation.
Josh does a good job of picking up on what I'm talking about.
Joshua is smart. He's able to listen and offer another perspective. He's very sincere. I feel understood.
I am amazed by BetterHelp in general and Joshua in particular. Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect from online counseling at such a low price. The BetterHelp web interface allows Joshua to share text messages and worksheets that add depth to the Live Sessions we have weekly over the phone. His response time to my messages is amazingly fast. Even on weekends.
I felt a great connection with Joshua right away. He is a great listener and has the ability to help me clarify murky, repetitive and circular thought patterns I experience. I look forward to our sessions and highly recommend him and BetterHelp.
Joshua is a great counselor I had two other ones before him and they were not as responsive as him I love feeling like he cares about my concerns and does the best he can to help me!
I am enjoying my conversations with Joshua. He is very kind and understanding. He usually responds to me very quickly. I feel like I am getting the help I need.
He is helping myself and husband to get out of the rut in our marriage. I would recommend BetterHelp to any busy professionals who have little time to go to counseling in person.
He is great in the approach he takes to my personal needs. He listens to what my concerns are. And is not super zealous to provide a quick fix but instead what will help me in the long run. He’s awesome! I went through a few counselors before Joshua Skinner. But now, I’m good with him. He’s the right counselor.
Joshua has been a great counselor to speak with over the last few weeks. He really researches and comes prepared to any of our discussion. In addition he is capable of finding the bright side of things when you can't, which is very encouraging. I look forward to many more sessions with him.
