About Me

Welcome! I am Julie Gamez, a licensed clinical social worker in Virginia. I have over 4 years of clinical experience in helping individuals and groups heal from past hurts, overcome fears and anxieties, and move into positions of personal power and strength. Much of my career has involved working with clients that have experienced trauma and its effects which can include post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, low self esteem and/or addictions. Often, I see clients that have childhood or family issues that impact their adult life in a negative way. The fear of facing their “skeletons in the closet” has held them back. I offer a non-judgmental, empathetic ear along with evidence based strategies to overcome distress and cultivate strength. The antidote to fear and shame is empathy and action. Knowing that you are not alone and with a person who will not judge or criticize you, can give you the courage you need to move forward into the life you want.

I received my Masters degree in social work from the University of New England and worked with the military community including service members and family members for many years all over the world. After settling down in Williamsburg, Virginia, I received my LCSW (License in Clinical Social Work) while working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

I use a strengths based approach with all of my clients which means I can see your positive qualities and help you to uncover them yourself. I offer strategies for overcoming fear, depression and anxiety. Many of my clients tell me that my relaxed, welcoming personality makes them feel like they are talking to an old friend. Since I believe (and research confirms) that a strong, client counselor relationship is the best predictor of success in therapy, I value that feedback above all else. Other clients tell me that I talk about the brain a lot! That may be because I frequently use neuroscience to support and explain why we do the things that we do, and how we can incorporate simple changes in how we think and act to produce the change we desire in our life. I hope we have an opportunity to walk along your path to change together.

Julie is the type of person I could see myself otherwise being friends with. She seems very compassionate. Her training and knowledge of how to respond to my concerns always comes through in her posts. She's very personable and I always feel better after reading her responses.

Julie is an excellent counselor. She is invested in the mental health of her clients and she is completely focused on the client's needs. If there were more counselors like Julie, who were truly invested in clients as though they are humans beings and not just clients, and people were willing to go to therapy with someone like Julie, it would drastically decrease the number of shootings, attacks, or random painful events that the world has been experiencing by people who are also crying out for help. She is the epitome of what therapists exist for - to heal, to soothe, to genuinely help and care for people without any expectation, and to also help people stand up again by themselves. She sees the best in people and that is something that money cannot always buy.
