Hi, my name is Karri Nelson and I am currently a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Colorado with over 12 years of behavioral health and human services experience. I received my Bachelors degree in Psychology in 2006 from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. After graduating with my undergraduate degree, I worked in Children Protective Services, foster care and adoption, case management, and crisis management services. While working full time, I began pursuing my Masters in Social Work and graduated from Marywood University in 2012. Since that time, I have provided individual therapy to adults, adolescents, and children in community behavioral health centers, group therapy within the state prison system, and in-home therapy and behavioral specialist services to children with autism and other behavioral health diagnoses.
Acknowledging that you need help and reaching out for it is powerful and choosing a therapist can be difficult. I often say that finding a good fit with a therapist is like finding a good pair of shoes. Sometimes you know right away that they are not a fit, sometimes the fit is just perfect from the beginning, and sometimes they work well for awhile, but you have to upgrade them to stay moving. Because of this, I like to share a bit about my personality and approach as I believe that this is important if we are going to be partners in meeting your goals.
I am originally from the east coast although I have also lived in the south and out of the country as well. I moved to Colorado in 2015 due to a strong desire to be near the mountains and improve my physical health. I enjoy hiking, camping, traveling, music, and lots of laughter. I was drawn to this field after going through difficult life experiences for which I sought therapy and experienced profound benefits leading me to a desire to help others through their personal journeys. I am a very open-minded, non-judgmental, and empathetic person. I am a strong ally and pride myself on being a support for individuals of all genders, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and abilities.
As a therapist, I use an integrative approach as each individual is unique, and to me, there is no “one size fits all” in therapy. I like to start off by learning more about you, your strengths, your goals, and any barriers that may be in the way. I can be flexible in approach depending on what you are looking for (i.e., interested in self-exploration, emotional processing, psycho-education and skill building, homework assignments/activities, etc). I am here to support you and am okay with you guiding your treatment or offering more guidance if you’d prefer. Some of the theories that I utilize are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing amongst others. I am also very interested in the influence nutrition and physical health can have on our mental health. I have experience in working with depression, anxiety, stress, LGBT and gender identity concerns, trauma, relationship/intimacy conflicts, self-esteem, and personal exploration.
If I seem like a good fit for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d love to partner with you and share in your journey.
