Dr. Kathy McCoy

(Ph.D., LMFT)

About Me

All of us have crisis points in our lives, times when it's hard to know what to do and where to turn. I'm here for you. My approach is gentle and down to earth. As a therapist, I provide a safe and caring place for you to express the full range of your thoughts and feelings as we work together toward realistic and sustainable life changes. My clinical orientation is eclectic, utilizing a variety of techniques. My sessions are tailored to whatever works best for you and your own unique needs.

I became a therapist during a mid-life career change. I have an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University's Los Angeles campus and a Ph.D. in Human Behavior from Pacific Western University, Los Angeles. I am a licensed LMFT in both Arizona and California, serving clients in both states. I worked in medical clinics and in my own private practice in Los Angeles for some years before moving to Arizona where I'm starting over with a new practice. My first two degrees -- a B.S. and M.S. in journalism from Northwestern University near Chicago -- led me to my initial career as a journalist and author, writing for a number of national magazines as well as over a dozen books including the recent "We Don't Talk Anymore: Healing After Parents and Their Adult Children Become Estranged." I write the "Complicated Love" blog for PsychologyToday.com and have an award-winning podcast "Living Fully with Dr. Kathy McCoy". As an author, I have been a guest on many national television shows including "Oprah" and "The Today Show."

I have found a lot of satisfaction as a writer, but the greatest joy of my working life is as a psychotherapist, helping clients to grow, to heal and to discover their own strengths and possibilities.

She is patient and gets to know you. She loves to give you her personal experiences to make your relationship closer which I love. It feels like you're talking to a human person and makes things feel more personal. She also loves to give me different suggestions on ways my issues can be helped.

Dr. McCoy’s vast experience combined with her kindness, compassion and her guileless sense of humor are the true embodiment of wisdom. Every week my gratitude and appreciation for her grows beyond what I thought was possible. She is a real gem!

Dr. McCoy has stirred me in a direction I didn’t know existed. I’ve been going to her for a month or 2 now and even though I’m struggling, I don’t feel I’m getting worse. Which is progress. It’s a great feeling knowing I have professional support. Thank you Dr. McCoy.

Kathy is a kind, conscientious and intelligent therapist who has a wealth of perspective to offer. I’ve consistently found across months of working with her that she tends to take up session time with talking about her life and problems. I don’t find that useful for my therapeutic needs.

It’s only been about two weeks since I started my journey with Dr. McCoy through BetterHelp and I can’t begin to tell you how much she has helped me already. It’s so great having someone I can talk to who understands not only the emotions I’m going through, but who can also give me professional advice on how I can improve. Dr. McCoy is very kind and empathetic and I feel so fortunate to have her as my counselor.
