About Me

Hello! My name is Katie. I am so glad you are exploring BetterHelp. I want to commend you on the courage you are showing in taking this first step on the path to healing!
Finding the right person to help you navigate this path is so important, so let me tell you a little about myself.

I am a Licensed Social Worker and also have my School Social Work certification. I earned my Masters in Social Work with an emphasis on Interpersonal Practice and Mental Health from the University of Michigan and my Bachelor of Social Work, with a double major in Psychology, from Calvin University. Much of my experience comes from my years as a School Social Worker at both the district and ISD level, helping kids to build positive relationships and strong social and emotional skills. As adults, there are times we also need support in these areas and my work as a School Social Worker has served to strengthen and enrich my passion for counseling at all ages. I have experience working with a broad age range in multiple settings and I connect well with people from many walks of life including: children with developmental and/or social/emotional challenges, adolescents in residential care with mental health and behavioral struggles, families facing a child’s disability or mental health diagnosis, and adults seeking therapy for Anxiety, Depression, OCD and family and life struggles. I am also happy to incorporate faith into sessions for those that desire it.

I find that the therapeutic relationship between the client and therapist is one of the most powerful tools for recovery. When you establish a trusting, empathetic relationship, you feel safe to be vulnerable and address life's challenges. It is within the context of this relationship that you can learn tools to tackle whatever obstacle is before you. As your therapist, I can promise you that I will be there for you: to listen, to encourage, to guide and to help you find the peace you are so courageously looking for. We would accomplish this together using effective, evidenced-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to identify and address thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are unhealthy; Dialectical Behavioral Therapy to learn tools to challenge unwanted thoughts, behaviors, and manage uncomfortable emotions; Exposure and Response Therapy to face and overcome anxiety, and more. My approach is strengths-based and solution-focused where you are in the driver's seat. I would find it a great honor to walk alongside you as you seek to not only overcome challenges, but thrive in the process.

I've worked with Katie for 5 months and she's helped me turn my whole life around. I met her during the darkest and hardest time of my life. She helped me find myself and my strength again. I was very nervous starting counseling but she made it so easy. She's a great listener, very understanding and supportive. She holds me accountable when I need it and has been a great support in my life. I'll forever be grateful that I made the choice to seek help and crossed paths with a therapist as great as Katie.

An angel sent to help me!
I met Katie when I started Betterhelp after searching on google for a safe suicide method. In this dark situation, Katie listened to me, realized my situation and my needs, and came to help as a professional. Not only she taught me practical ways to improve the situation and cope with the severe depression but also her kind soul genuinely cared and brought me back to my senses and reconnected me with God. She also found me a community mental health care program that I could actually afford. I would say she was the most contributing factor in my experience combating severe depression. Can not recommend her enough!

Katie is great! I really appreciate the time she gives to me. Our scheduled appointments are really helpful. She is kind, knowledgeable, supportive, and offers helpful suggestions and tools. She checks in on the chat and responds to my messages to her very quickly. I'm new to therapy, but am having a very positive experience. I like the platform, the forms, goals, worksheets, and the video meetings.
