About me

Hello,

My name is Kelsey Hopson-Shiller, and I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Southern California. I earned my Master of Social Work degree, with a concentration in Children and Families, and a sub-specialty in Animal Assisted Therapy from the University of Denver in 2010. I've had the opportunity to work in a wide variety of settings- from in home, to school-based work, to anger management and conflict resolution, as well as providing support to separating or divorcing families. I am experienced in providing therapy to individuals, adolescents, children, and families. I have also had the opportunity, especially through my experience as an Animal-Assisted Therapist, to work with children with disabilities and other special needs as well as families going through the foster care system, or families that have been built in part through adoption.

The message I share most often with my clients is that therapy is for EVERYONE! Therapy gives us tools to put in our toolbox- whether it's a short-term struggle, a problem that benefits from some outside perspective, or doing deeper work on our relationships with ourselves and others. Stigma around mental health tells us that 'broken' or 'crazy' people are the ones who seek out counseling, and this simply couldn't be further from the truth! Counseling and therapy offers everyone the chance to ease the burdens we are all carrying via a non judgmental ear combined with the training and experience to bring efficient solutions and opportunities for healing.

You are welcome to message me anytime through Better Help. I usually check messages twice each day, five days per week- I believe good boundaries are helpful for everyone, and I want to model this for my clients as well, so I do take two full days to rest and recharge each week. I want to bring the best I have to offer to each of my clients, and setting modest limits on my availability helps me to do that! I offer messaging, live chat, video, and phone sessions. My calendar may not reflect my only availability so you can always check with me about another time you might prefer through messaging first.

I wish you all the best and look forward to working with you soon!

Kelsey has been a kind, stable, and positive force in my life over the past year. What started as needing support after a breakup turned into a deeper journey of healing and self exploration. My mood is better and I'm building habits. She's great at keeping me accountable. Thank you Kelsey!

I was having extreme struggles with a job. Tons of anxiety, strsss. Lost a close friend. Home and other personal struggles all at the same time. Kelsey has helped me a lot with listening and understanding all the issues I had. Changed jobs and the anxiety is minimal but still lingers. She is consistent and continues to understand all the problems I throw at her and helps me to follow through with ways to deal with everything. I really like that she is able to give perspective and help me see through the mud and being that third-person perspective is so great! Sometimes it's hard to get out of my head and she allows me to spill everything.

SHE IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST!

Great for first timers!
I had no clue what to expect getting into counseling. I was nervous about the premise of working through my personal problems with a complete stranger especially when I was feeling my most vulnerable. In my first meeting with Kelsey her casual attitude caught me off guard. I'd expected either a professional, clinical, austere encounter, or an airy-fairy spiritualist experience. Kelsey was neither, she's matter-of-fact while still being empathetic and casual without being over-familiar. Her genuine, informal manner was effective in normalizing the experience, and made me feel comfortable disclosing feelings I'm typically not comfortable discussing. Her style makes it obvious she's on your side, and she feels genuinely supportive of coping mechanisms to walk oneself out of trouble. I trust her insight and her point of view.
