About me

First of all, congratulations on making this first step in achieving your optimal self!

Are you feeling stuck in the past or worried about the future?
Have you experienced a major life change and feel overwhelmed?
Do you feel confused about what the next chapter of your life will look like?
Are you interested in exploring some of your thoughts and behavior patterns, world view, and unique identities (race, ethnicity, ability status, gender, sexuality, religion)?

You have come to the right place!

I have been practicing as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Georgia for 10 years working with kids, adolescents, and families. I have experience working with an array of issues related to anxiety, depression, life changes, divorce, and identity development. I have always been interested in social justice issues, human behavior and the social emotional and mental health areas of life. I grew up in a lovely small farm town in Indiana but was happy to fly the coupe and explore the world as soon as I could. I have been privileged to travel and explore many different cultures in the world. I have lived in Perth, Australia, Charleston, South Carolina, and currently live in Atlanta, Georgia.

I obtained a Bachelors degree in Human Development and Families Studies from Indiana University in 2005, went on to get a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling from Webster University in 2008, and finally graduated from Georgia State University in 2014 with a PhD in Counselor Education and Practice. Through my extensive training and diverse experiences, I feel like I am equipped to help my clients reach their goals and reframe some of their presenting issues.

My counseling style is warm, nonjudgmental, and collaborative. I believe that we are all masters of our own lives and withhold the knowledge, skills, and insights to make the changes we want, sometimes we just need someone to facilitate that process or get us started on the journey. I utilize narrative therapy and brief-solution focused techniques to help my clients, reflect, reframe, and set goals. Some of the activities that I use are strength assessments, journaling, genograms, music, art, and identity development activities.

I really look forward to working with you in the near future!

Dr. Corthell is absolutely amazing! These past two years, I have learned so much. I cannot imagine where I would be if I didn't have her to talk to. She always offers such great insight and makes me feel heard. Her perspectives have been life-changing and I am forever grateful to have had her as my therapist.
