Kristine Hanson

About Me

My name is Kristine and I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) in the state of Minnesota and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) in the state of Hawaii. I received my Master of Arts degree in Addiction Counseling: Advanced Practice from the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies and I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I previously worked with adult clients for nearly 5 years at a recovery center for women with co-occurring disorders (a substance use disorder and mental health disorder). I truly enjoy working with people who are willing to put in the work to overcome life challenges so they can become their best self. I have worked with clients dealing with a variety of concerns such as substance use, depression, anxiety, grief/loss, life transitions, self-esteem, stress management, anger and emotion regulation. In all of my therapeutic relationships my goal is to help my clients feel supported, validated and empowered.

I would describe my counseling style as a mixture of person-centered and cognitive-behavioral while also incorporating motivational interviewing and trauma-informed techniques. The main tenet in person-centered therapy that I wholeheartedly believe in is that we all have the ability within ourselves for healing, personal growth and self-actualization. I prioritize building and strengthening the therapeutic alliance with each client and serve as a guide on your life journey by providing insight, empathy, support and unconditional positive regard in a non-judgmental way. I meet each client where they are at and individualize care to meet your specific needs and goals.

I am an animal lover. I rescued a dog and a cat years ago that have since made up my little family and are a very important part of my life. My dog and I completed all the requirements to become a certified therapy dog team in early 2020. I am thrilled that she is now considered an official helping professional too. I love my family, music, crafts, nature, essential oils, outdoor activities, dancing and Springbok jigsaw puzzles.

I look forward to working with you, getting to know you and helping you become your best self so you can meet your specific goals. I would be honored to be a part of your journey.
