I'm a licensed professional counselor (LPC) through the state of Wyoming and I've worked with clients in all types of settings, from all different backgrounds, of all different ages. Much of my professional experience has been helping clients with depression, anxiety, self-esteem, trauma, and certain types of addiction, as well relationships and grief. As both a therapist with four years of experience and as a client who has attended many years of therapy myself, I’ve realized how important it is that as therapists we both get good training and experience, while also exploring our own inner emotional landscapes.
Mindfulness is the bedrock of my work with my clients, but as more than just a tool I give them. Having practiced it extensively gives me the capacity to be fully present with you. Mindfulness and meditation have also helped me cultivate compassion and authenticity, so you can trust I can be honest, but gentle and patient with you.
Mindfulness is also a major part of my practice because my professional and personal experience is that underneath much of our emotional struggles is a history of various kinds of trauma. New research is showing the way trauma impacts our nervous systems by triggering old emotions and unhealthy ways of coping, even painful stories about who we are. By “attending and befriending” our emotions as they express themselves as thoughts and feelings using mindfulness, we can help “update” our nervous systems. We can gently, patiently, and compassionately help ourselves recognize that we are okay and begin to respond differently to our life circumstances. Clients have told me over and over how helpful it is to have this explained, and how it motivates them to do this work.
Tools and skills are also integral to this process. This is where I can give you a variety of specific mindfulness tools, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy exercises, to help cope with and navigate your symptoms. Being able to identify when we’re triggered and practice healthy ways of coping with those triggers allows us to slowly build our internal resources and resiliency. My experience teaching Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) means I have a solid toolbox to help regulate emotions, become more effective in relationships, and tolerate emotional distress. We’ll also explore what has worked for you so far, naming the strengths that are already serving you.
Insight into our inner workings, capacity to stay present with ourselves, and supportive tools all work together to allow us to make this journey. It doesn’t matter what we’re bringing to the table, whether it be profound grief or mild anxiety, we don’t have to soldier through on our own. In our hyper individualistic society where we may subconsciously believe we need to “pull ourselves up by our bootstraps,” this is a radical notion, and our nonjudgmental, authentic relationship alone can be deeply healing.
What both my clients and I have learned is that it is absolutely possible to change. I offer guidance and support from a place of integrity, from knowing the types of twists and turns of the journey, and integrating that with my professional experience having successfully helped diverse clients each with unique issues.
