About me

Hello and welcome to BetterHelp! Navigating life’s many challenges in an increasingly chaotic world can feel overwhelming, scary, and even numbing; in beginning the process of reaching out for help, you have taken an important step in a journey of self-empowerment and personal wellness. Congratulations!

My name is Kyle Austin (pronouns = he/him/his) and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in New York. I have worked for 10 years providing mental health and substance abuse counseling in the behavioral healthcare field, including inpatient, outpatient, residential, community, wilderness/experiential, and school-based settings. My work has included seeing individuals, families, and couples of all ages. I am a passionate advocate for social equity, justice, and accessibility to services for all, and while I work with people of all walks and persuasions, I specialize in therapy with members of the LGBTQ+ community, individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use challenges, and those dealing with trauma, depression, and anxiety.

My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, trauma-informed, and person-centered. This means that my primary goal is to work with you to identify the ways in which past experiences and/or present circumstances are keeping you from moving forward at the pace that you want for your personal wellness journey. I work from a holistic framework, allowing us to examine and increase satisfaction across all areas of a person’s life.

While my theoretical focus is primarily in the realm of cognitive behavioral therapy, I also integrate dialectical behavioral, mindfulness, narrative, and interpersonal therapeutic approaches in order to tailor my approach to one that fits your situation and needs. Our working relationship is critical to your success, and while using the evidence-based approaches above is important, my number one concern will be aligning my work with you in a way that feels respectful, accessible, and ultimately, helpful.

Thank you for taking the time to read about me. I look forward to the privilege of joining, supporting, and empowering you on this journey. Let’s get started!

Kyle is the actual best. After years of struggling to connect with therapists, Kyle has been a dream to work with. He's created a safe, trusting environment for us to but also pushes me to work through chronic and long-standing challenges I've had. He is a big part of the reason I have hope for a brighter future for myself.

Kyle has helped me a lot in the short while we have been communicating. He has offered some great advice and I have been feeling better about myself and not been as depressed since we started. Getting much more sleep than I had been getting before

I have been in therapy most of my life, I've had a lot of therapists. Kyle is by far the best therapist I have ever had. I have never felt so seen, and he is so attentive and responsive. I feel very lucky to have found him.

Kyle has been an incredible support over the last few months navigating some challenging emotional landscapes. He is so personable which makes him really easy to talk to and share personal experiences. He’s receptive and supportive while always drawing attention to new ways of thinking and problematic behavior/responses. He’s an exceptional counselor and always goes above and beyond to support my needs.
