Laura Funkhouser, LCSW-C, LICSW
About me
I am a licensed clinical social worker with over 10 years of experience in the field of human services, with the most recent 7 years providing direct psychotherapy to children, families, and young adults. Most recently, I have provided over 1,000 hours of teletherapy to clients. I am working out of the state of Maryland, and am also licensed in Virginia and the District of Columbia. I have worked with people from a large variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, who come to therapy with a wide array of issues. I am also an LGBTQ+ friendly provider.
One of the most important factors for success in therapy is based on a positive clinician-client rapport and alliance. I use a warm, client-centered and strengths-based approach to providing therapy. I believe in following the client's lead as well as helping to develop goals for therapy. The type of therapy I provide is integrative, meaning I use various techniques from a variety of modalities and theoretical frameworks. Some of these include CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), solution-focused, psychodynamic, and family systems work. I would be happy to describe any of these approaches to you so we can individualize your treatment plan.
Feel free to ask me any other questions you might have about my background and experience.

Ms. Funkhouser is kind and attentive - I've never done any sort of therapy before, and her approach feels like a perfect fit. :)

Laura is an incredible listener who allows me to fully express how I feel, without pressure or judgement and responds with kind, helpful feedback. She is always sure to follow up with relevant feedback and resources in between our sessions and makes herself readily available to meet. I would recommend Laura to anyone.

Laura is terrific! She really takes the time to listen to me and understand what I am going through. She provides really thoughtful points and questions for me to think through. I am really thankful to have been matched with her! I honestly would not be able to make it through some of my big life changes now without her.
