I am a Licensed Professional Counselor located in rural, far southwestern Virginia. I have been a resident here for the last 25 years. Prior to that, I lived in several different states on both the East and West Coasts. My undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Virginia Tech. My Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling is from Capella University. I have worked in multiple industries and fields, prior to switching careers and becoming a counselor. As a result of the range of my life experiences, I incorporate a breadth of practical and effective knowledge and strategies within counseling practice.
I provide services to a wide-range of individuals with diverse needs. I work with individuals from ages 5 to advanced geriatric. I work with neurotypical individuals and with individuals who live with intellectual disabilities, autism, or traumatic brain injuries. I provide services to individuals who seek treatment for depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, coping with chronic illnesses, and adjustment to life issues (such as time-management, stress, or family relationships). I also work well with individuals who are seeking treatment for trauma and/or addiction issues. I provide services to individuals from different cultural backgrounds. While I do not specialize, I particularly enjoy working with individuals who are seeking services for coping with chronic illness, personality disorders, family issues, and bipolar disorder.
I do not treat anorexia or provide counseling for people seeking court-mandated sexual offenders counseling.
My counseling style is solution-focused, practical, and rather blunt. I am a teacher and a counselor. I consider you the expert in your life - and this expertise and desire for change is what you bring to the partnership we will form. I bring compassion, a willingness to not judge, and a ton of tools to the partnership. It is my job to provide you space and tools to work on your goals. It is yours to determine what to accomplish and how quickly you wish to do so.
I provide services through video conferencing, phone calls, live chat, and asynchronous messaging. I find that the best results occur when at least some of the interactions are through video conferencing or phone call. However, there are times or circumstances where asynchronous chat works best for the client's schedule. Basically, the way services are provided depends on how you need them to be provided.
I work full-time at a brick-and-mortar counseling center on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. While I check messages and have some appointments available to my online clients, I have limited availability those days. I devote Mondays and Fridays to online counseling. I have much more availability those days and my responses on those days are much more in-depth. I spend Sundays with my family and so will not be responding on Sunday to messages.
Regarding filling out forms and writing letters (Ex. for disability, emotional support animals, school, etc): I do provide letters and complete paperwork for clients who are in Virginia, who have worked with me for at least 6 months, and who have at least 2 meetings per month via video conferencing. A release of information will need to be signed and notarized (which ensures that the person is indeed in Virginia) and mailed on paper to me at my brick-and-mortar office in order for me to be able to complete any paperwork. For any letter or paperwork filled completed, it will be noted that services occurred via video conference (and supplemented by other methods, if applicable). I do not charge for this. I consider it to be part of the work of a licensed professional counselor. Due to severe allergies (life-threatening), I cannot respond in person to requests to appear in court.
I look forward to working with you.

Laura makes you instantly feel comfortable talking to her. She has a calming presence.
Laura is great! She's very good at listening and seeing multiple perspectives.
Laura was awesome, she made me disscoverd myself again. I found out that I had ADHD which was surprising to me because I thought it was depression. She was a great listener and she knows what questions to ask to help me out.
After a session with Laura I always feel much better. For each session, I leave with at least one focus point, that I can work on until the next week.
The most useful counseling I have ever experienced. I cannot speak highly enough of Laura's skills as a counsellor.
Laura is very sweet and kind! Anything that I wanted to talk about she would just listen and go along with it. She gave me some good advice and new perspectives on how to look at things going on in my life. I would recommend her to anyone!
Loved working with her. Great listener. I would recommend her.
I like Laura she has been very helpful to me.
I feel very confident in Laura's knowledge and ability. She seems to be very aware of issues and disorders. She is easy to talk to and down to earth.
Laura is very clear and spot on with her help. I trust her advice and always look forward to our sessions.
Laura's style is incredibly efficient in that it's comfortable and you feel heard, and it's highly solution-oriented so that you can gain clarity, learn about useful resources, and start developing and working towards goals quickly. Even just a couple of sessions with her were really helpful in helping me work through problems I had been stuck on for months!
Solution-focused, empathetic yet objective, Laura was a fabulous counselor. She zoomed in very quickly on the root issues and was able to immediately work with me on solutions.
