About me

Hello, I am happy that you have made the first step towards healing. My name is Laurel Wood I am A licensed clinical social worker. Depending on the state I hold an LCSW or a LICSW license which basically means I can work with you independently based on your current issues. I graduated from Columbia University in 1993, so I have been working in this field for many years. I started out working at a private psychiatric hospital in their partial hospital program and then moved to work inpatient. I am very familiar with major mental illness and negotiating the whole process from 1st diagnosis of a loved one or 1st diagnosis that you have been told you have. I have a lot of experience with dealing with depression, anxiety, bipolar illness, and schizophrenia. For the last 18 years, I have worked with adults and geriatric people who have been living in assisted living facilities and/or skilled nursing homes. In this role, I have a lot of knowledge about adjustment disorders, caregiver support, anxiety, and depression, as well as loss and grief. Personally, I have worked with many people who are coping with their sexual identity. I am very supportive of the LBGTQ community.

I enjoy my work with people immensely and cannot imagine doing any other type of work. My style is fluid in that I try to meet the individual or client where they are at. I have provided supportive therapy, motivational therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness therapy, and solution-focused therapy over the years. I believe the most important part of therapy is establishing a relationship that provides empathy and positive regard for you and the issues with which you are seeking help. Once we have a good rapport, we can work on making those important changes together with built-in trust between us. I look forward to meeting you!

Reviews

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Laurel Wood. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.

Laurel has helped me in so many ways this past year that I've lost count. I started BetterHelp to deal with grieving the loss of my sibling and in turn I've gained so much insight about myself and how I can work on how I go about things going forward. For years I've searched for a therapist and with my new work schedule, it's really hard to make in-person appointments happen so BetterHelp seemed like the way to go and boy was it one of the best decisions I ever made. I've always had a hard time retaining therapists and I really sincerely feel I hit the jackpot with Laurel. We cover everything and anything from serious mental illness topics to work-related business and moves I should make going forward in my career, to just gossiping about all the things that go on in my life and joking around about the mundane things. She is so easy to talk to and provides stellar feedback and communication and helps me with my own communication styles. I truly believe I wouldn't be where I am today in terms of my own confidence and healing journey if I wasn't able to talk to Laurel every week. She's been such a highlight for my weeks and I always look forward to catching up with her and just blurting about everything going on in my life, talking about these things out loud really does make all the difference. When that doesn't work, the worksheets she provides are also really helpful in breaking down concepts that I need to work on. 100/10 for Laurel.

Laurel is a thoughtful, patient, and insightful therapist who really helped me transform my outlook on relationships. Her kind manner made it easy to open up and hone in on the changes I needed to make. She taught me the importance of establishing boundaries in my friend and familial relationships. Her guidance has truly transformed my life. She's my therapist, but I also consider her a friend.
