About Me

My name is Lauren Ungar. I did social work for many years before returning to school to do a doctorate in clinical psychology. I have worked as a psychotherapist for more than 20 years, including in general outpatient psychotherapy, and nursing home settings. I focus on helping people to overcome depression and anxiety and also do a lot of work helping people to improve all kinds of relationships. Including setting boundaries. If I work with you, the psychotherapy would focus on your values and goals. If we work together, I would probably suggest that we discuss and set goals for therapy together. My thinking about the work I do draws and many psychotherapy traditions, including Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Existential psychotherapy, intergenerational family therapies, Motivational Interviewing, Behavioral therapies. With my social work background, I am very aware of the many factors that shape who we are, including race, ethnic background, family expectations and culture, sexual identity, and these are likely to come into our discussion as we work on your goals. Please feel free to message me at any time, I respond to If I work with you, I may suggest that we discuss your values and set goals for therapy together. I love it when clients are motivated to learn and grow, and I’m happy to work with you to find worksheets or readings to help you to meet your goals . I look at my messages at least twice a day. (Less often on weekends and US holidays).

A lovely person, Dr Ungar is non-judgmental but provides useful tools to help with acknowledgment and understanding one’s self.

Dr. Ungar is wonderful and I’m so grateful for the journey therapy is taking me on with her assistance, I feel supported, listened to - and helped, things I’ve been seeking for a very long time. Understanding, gentle and objective - I couldn’t recommend her enough

I had a bad first experience with BetterHelp. My first counselor was inattentive, uninquisitive, and even fell asleep during one session. I decided to try again with a new counselor and found Dr. Ungar. She exceeded all of my expectations and I finally got the counseling support that I had sought out in the first place. While it seems BetterHelp might be hit or miss for counselors, I would recommend Dr. Ungar to anyone regardless of the platform. She is reaffirming and supportive, and she has helped me keep an eye on my own psychosocial "blind spots". I am thankful for this experience, and thankful for BetterHelp for the service to allow counselors like Dr. Ungar to be accessible to the public.

I have been reluctant to try therapy, even though I know I needed it. I joined BetterHelp and matched with Dr. Ungar. I saw her education and felt confident she could help me. Within 10 minutes of our first session she correctly identified my issues and we came up with a plan to address my issues over the course of my therapy. I highly recommend her to anyone.

Dr. Ungar really listened to me and I felt seen. She met me right where I was at, and taught me a variety of tools to cope with my anxiety. I feel like I can tackle my anxious thoughts head on, and I am not at the mercy of them any longer. Thank you Dr. Ungar :)

My original thoughts for using better help were to just try and experiment with it to see my options. I didn’t expect it to help me as much as it did. Dr. Ungar really listened to everything I had to say and gave me good advice and things to practically work on and take away with me. All of my expectations were exceeded. Because of Dr. Ungar I feel like I’m in a much better space than when I first started.

Dr. Ungar has been there for me when I had doubts about myself. She would always reply to me by text in between session, which was amazing knowing I did not need to overthink until my next session. She was really nice!

Written by S.H. on Sep 07, 2020 after therapy with Lauren for 2 weeks on issues concerning depression, stress, anxiety, relationship issues, family conflicts, intimacy-related issues, eating disorders, sleeping disorders, and self esteem

Dr. Ungar was a wonderful person to talk to. She helped me understand myself and always encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone to push myself to be the best version of me. She listened to what I had to say and always would ask me my own opinion on my situation. She is a very calm, reliable, and trustworthy person to be talking to. Dr. Ungar allowed me to find my self again by sending relevant worksheets for me to read over, giving advice on what to do, and being honest with what I would say. Overall, I had a good experience with Dr. Ungar and I would recommend her to anyone who is struggling. I will be requesting Dr. Ungar again if I need to do a therapy session in the future. 5/5.
