About me
Hello and THANK YOU for being here! First off, KUDOS to you for seeking additional support and getting yourself to this point. Life is hard enough and you don't need to figure it out alone. I am here to meet you wherever you are on your journey, and to actively listen, engage, empower, and support you. My philosophy is to see and treat people holistically—an individual, as a whole, is comprised of many intricate, complex, and interconnected moving parts that make up who they are. If a part is out of sync, then the individual may be affected emotionally, mentally, and/or physically. Healing and growth can occur when a person is seen and treated wholly. It is important to me to foster a safe and brave space. In doing so, I will be non-judgmental, respectful, and open-minded.
To determine if I meet your needs as a therapist, this is who I am professionally and personally:
My first name is Mai Khou ("My-Koo"). Professionally, I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in the state of Minnesota with 13 years of professional Social Work experience. I have expertise in the disabilities (both physically and developmentally) and mental health fields. I am well-versed in serving and working with people from diverse populations and demographics. My approach is person-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive. I utilize a variety of approaches and treatment modalities including Strengths-Based Approach, Solutions-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. One way I assist individuals to improve their quality of life is to guide them to mindfully and intentionally increase their skills to regulate their emotions, and to recognize and disrupt thoughts contributing to unproductive or harmful behaviors. I will work with you to offer support and guidance that is caring and effective.
I am a BIPOC clinician and my unique combination of personal and professional experiences makes me a well-rounded person and clinician. I can genuinely empathize and understand the many, and often unexpected, challenges life brings. I enjoy mentoring and helping people grow, especially students, new mothers/parents, caregivers, and working professionals. Those who know me, either professionally or personally, describe me as: wise beyond my years; having grit, resilience, and integrity; no-nonsense; conscientious; easy to talk with; honest; caring; empathetic; and responsible. I am a passionate life-long learner and believe in the importance of continued growth, discovery, and development.
If you decide to take that next step to connect with me, then I would be so honored to work with you! Wishing you peace!

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Mai Khou Yang. We don’t pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.
Very kind. Has offered me great advice
I was so nervous to start therapy. I started with a text session first and found Mai comfortable to talk to so I decided to switch to video sessions. This switch was great and in just a few sessions, Mai was able to help me identify small, but effective changes in my life to improve, well... everything! I look forward to talking with her during weekly and, although I'm proud of the progress I've made, I'm a little sad that I won't get to chat with her each week! She feels like a friend!
Mai Khou was truly one of the most helpful professionals I’ve worked with in my therapy journey. She listened with an open mind, communicated with empathy/understanding and was very helpful in reframing as well as approaching situations with perspective. I can’t say enough good things about Mai Khou and would highly recommend her if you’re looking for someone who is genuine and truly listens to her clients!
I started therapy in the fall and have worked weekly with Mai Khou. I have wanted to do therapy for a while but was always so nervous of feeling uncomfortable around someone new. She immediately made me feel comfortable and seen and helped me tremendously. I have a couple family conflicts that have led to difficult relationships and trauma. She has helped me identify true thoughts vs harmful thoughts, helped me learn to rethink situations and given me tools to help navigate my emotions and responses when other conflicts may arise. I very much would recommend her to anyone!
Mai Khou was exactly who I needed when I was feeling stressed and overwhelmed. She actively listened to everything I had to say and helped me set goals for myself that were realistic and achievable. She gives very useful advice and I would highly recommend her.
Mai Khou Yang has been a great resource in my mental health journey. She is knowledgable, welcoming, encouraging, and extremely personable. She has already given me so many great insights and tools to use to better my mental health in just a few short weeks. She is very responsive, flexible, and I would recommend her to anybody! I am very appreciate of her and the work she has done with me so far and I only hope to continue up on that journey with her by my side!
First time doing therapy enjoyed the advice, guidance and felt supported. Loved her insight when we addressed problems and suggestions on processing. I am grateful that I got matched with Mai Khou Yang.
