Maria Duggan, MSW, LICSW (MA)
1988 MSW, Simmons College School of Social Work, Boston, MA
1986 BS, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA
I have thirty years of clinical experience with individuals, families and have held a variety of positions as clinical social worker in a variety of settings. These settings include inpatient hospitals, community mental health agencies, partial hospital/intensive outpatient group programs, home health, and school settings. Diagnostic groups I've worked with include dual diagnosis, addictions, major mental illness, and PTSD. I also have previous experience with disaster mental health with the American Red Cross, including deployment in the aftermath of 9/11, and experience with Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM- for first responders). I have experience working with diverse clients, including Veterans, active duty military, and their families; and people of many different cultural backgrounds. The importance of cultural competence in psychotherapy is a primary focus for me.
With my many years of experience, I have learned that the best way to help a client to start where that client is, in their life and in terms of their goals. My job is to help you understand your goals, and to facilitate the implementation of your goals. For instance, whether your goal is better relationships, improved communication, or cessation of compulsive behaviors, I'm here to help you formulate a plan. It's important for me to take the time to better understand you as we work towards those goals. I have years of training including a variety of evidence based practices. These include family systems work, twelve step based addictions approaches, cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy (a strengths based approach), and a variety of stress management and mindfulness techniques.
My approach is that of friendliness, mindfulness and non-judgmental acceptance of my clients. My initial goal is to provide support while we get to know each other. Taking that step to seek psychotherapy can feel like a big risk. It's important for you to feel reassured and comfortable in this online space. That includes confidentiality, professionalism, and reliability on my part. Client feedback is very important and is the basis of the therapist-counselor working relationship. I make myself as approachable as possible, so that you can feel comfortable sharing everything that needs to be shared. I look forward to meeting you, and am open to any questions you may have about my qualifications and experience.

Maria is the first counselor I've had who has been both a great listener and a great feedback-giver. I'm not here to just hear myself talk, so I really appreciate that she breaks down what I'm saying and feeling and actively helps me process everything. She also makes great suggestions, helps me set goals and next steps for improvement, and checks in regularly to see if it's helping. She's great at honing in on the specific issues I want to deal with, but also at asking for general questions and looking at the big picture. I would definitely recommend her.
She is the best!
Maria is extremely kind and helpful as I am working through many issues going on in my life. She offers practical advice to help cope, as well as understanding and patience while guiding me through my challenges. I appreciate her approach and her genuine concern.
Fantastic! Listens, and offers real word advice that may help you feel better. Highly recommend.
Maria is compassionate and a good listener. Her feedback is insightful and I have found her approach effective.
What impressed me most about Maria was not only was she a kind, objective listener but each time, she managed to identify exactly what the real underlying issues were so we could focus on those and find solutions. I really appreciated her uncanny ability to sift through all the information I was giving her to do this. I also really appreciated how comfortable I felt talking to her and how easy it was for me to open up in her presence. I felt like I was talking to a long-time friend.
I really enjoyed each chat I had with Maria. She is truly a kind, non-judgmental and skillful counselor.
