About me

Hello! Thank you for viewing my therapy practice details on the BetterHelp therapy platform. I applaud you on researching therapists to help address your behavioral-health concerns. My name is Dr. Maria Finizio (Dr. Fin). I am a licensed professional counselor in the state of Pennsylvania (PC007257). (I do not provide letters to a court, school, employer, etc. nor recommendations for guide dogs.) (For more important information, please see the footnote at the end of this document.) I work with clients 20 and older (over 19) who are experiencing difficulty in any of the following areas: academics, anger management, anxiety, career, college life, grief, self-esteem, and sports performance. To help you increase your strength in those areas, I use Solution-Focused Therapy and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, both goal-oriented methods where we work on addressing a specific concern before moving on to the next concern.

Using a goal-oriented approach to treatment, I will help you to learn coping strategies and to gain insight into your concerns. This approach can help you improve your intrapersonal skills (understanding self) and interpersonal skills (communicating with others) that you may need to be successful at home, school, work, leisure.

My work experience in behavioral health and in education contributes to my goal-oriented therapeutic approach. I have worked with patients in urban and suburban mental health clinics. Plus, I have experience working as an instructor at a local college where I taught composition and at a local school district where I teach Psychology. I am a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA).

My academic degrees include the following: BS, MA, MA, MS, EdD

Footnote:

I am a licensed professional counselor in the state of Pennsylvania (LPC #PC007257). I practice within the scope of the Pennsylvania Professional Counselor Code. I want to highlight some information that you received in the Consent to Treat and Informed Consent document.

What we discuss in a therapy session is confidential. However, there are three limits to confidentiality by ethics and law. As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), I am required to follow those three limits:

1) Act 31 - I am required by law to report suspected child abuse and neglect to Child Protective Services.

2) Tarasoff Duty To Protect & Warn - If a client makes a serious threat to harm another person, I am required by law to report that threat to the intended victim and to the police department.

3) If a client mentions that he/she is experiencing suicidal ideation, I will develop a contract for safety with the client if possible. I will also provide the client with the number to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. If the client expresses a suicidal plan with intent and means, I will email BetterHelp. Then, I will contact the client and/or the local authorities in the client's geographic area to have a well-check completed in order to keep the client from self-harm.

Thank you for reading the above-stated information. I look forward to working with you!

Dr. Finizio was great to work with and greatly exceeded my expectations of a counselor. She is extremely attentive and responds promptly. In addition, she provides tools allowing you to help yourself and make true progress. Always there when you need her and great at checking in when things are going well.
