About me

Hello! I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Counselor who has been in practice for approximately 9 years. I have taught behavioral science at the university level for 10 years. I am also a licensed Utah Realtor, local short filmmaker, photographer, singer and performer. I consider all of these my professions. I would love to be a lawyer (hey, maybe one day)! Life is not unidimensional, nor should it be.

I have always liked psychology (who doesn’t!) and counseling was a natural fit. I like to consider myself "psychologically minded," meaning it is easy for me to be in the right mental place to help clients with their thoughts, emotions, and ideas that may seem obscure or hard to grasp.

On a more personal level, so you can get to know a little bit more about me, I am a California native (from the Silicon Valley). I have lived in Utah for 15 years and I call Utah my home, since Utah is where I spent most of my young adult and adult life and where I have created my career(s) and my family.

I graduated from Brigham Young University with a BS degree in psychology in 2008; I graduated from Westminster College with an MS degree in Professional Counseling in 2011.

I am a married mother of two children and an animal lover who has 6 fur babies - 3 Chihuahuas, 2 French Bulldogs, a German Shepherd, and a cat. I am also a business owner in the local counseling community (locations in Sandy and Provo).

I am a practical, analytical, and logical individual, which plays a significant role in how I approach clients in therapy. I am trained in the therapeutic techniques of REBT, CBT, DBT, EMDR, narrative therapy, personality disorders, and I am psychodynamically minded by training.

I aim to help in even what might seem the smallest nuances of life. For example, are you a "chameleon" or a "yes person?" Are these things hurting or compromising your psychological well-being? I can help you work through that. There is no concern too small or too large that it is not relevant or worth addressing.

My style is straight forward, blunt, and I use extensive questioning. I am an efficient clinician for individuals struggling with social phobia, relationship concerns, self-esteem issues, emotional confusion, identity crises, and for anyone seeking the ability to self-express more liberally and learn to be themselves.

Marissa gives it to me straight, which is exactly what I was looking for in a therapist. Her broad knowledge, friendly and supportive ear, and thoughtful Q&A gets me to dig deep and keep expanding. I highly recommend her!

Marissa is easy to talk to, caring, and works hard to understand where you’re coming from, even when you have a hard time understanding yourself. I feel comfortable and safe talking with her!

Marissa Sherman is very down to earth and a "dope" person to talk to. She has provided me with such an in-depth insight and perspective that has challenged my line of thinking. She does a great job of listening to me and allow our sessions to be semi-structured in nature without it feeling coerced. Highly recommend for others!

Marissa Sherman has been an amazing counselor. She helped me in a couple months to do what I was unable to accomplish in a lifetime. I came into my ordeal skeptical that I could be helped, but I am glad that I decided to take this step and my life is better for it. I would recommend Marissa to anyone. She is unique and fun and has a refreshing, intelligent and well thought out perspective. She is a true and caring ally in my journey.

It feels so good to talk to someone about issues I don’t want to talk about with my husband, sisters or friends. Marissa validates my thoughts and issues without making me feel bad.
