Multiculturally aware, bilingual, independently licensed mental health therapist who understands that compassion and relationship building are at the core of the healing process. I am a trauma-informed, dialectical, and person-centered clinician who believes in both practical and deeply, emotionally based healing processes.
I am a graduate of John Carroll University and have 9 years of experience working in the mental health field. I have worked with clients in various community mental health settings with problems ranging from situational life stress to severe mental illness. Some special interests include: PTSD and trauma related disorders, anxiety disorders, life transitions, parenting issues, existential issues, couples counseling and personality disorders. I have also completed multiple research projects focusing on anxiety and the efficacy of different treatment modalities. I possess the skills, expertise and compassion to help individuals with a wide range of issues or concerns.
I take a person-centered approach, where I work on building a strong therapeutic relationship with each client in order to help them reach their greatest potential and work towards reaching their goals. I believe that connection and relationship are the two foundations to personal growth. The strength of the relationship is based on my ability to maintain a non-judgmental, trusting and validating environment for the client while encouraging growth. My techniques include an integrative approach, combining multiple techniques, with an emphasis on Mindfulness-based techniques and DBT skills.

Martha has been very helpful in dealing with many of my concerns and areas of struggle when it comes to mental health. Her perspective extends beyond that of every other counsellor / therapist I have worked with before. I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone who wishes to better understand themselves.
Martha is very kind and professional! She's excellent at working out what the root cause for issues are, then working out how to handle it. 10/10!
I worked with Martha Portman for a few months. It was a wonderful experience and I think she did a lot to help with my anxiety. She helps in a way that isn’t uncomfortable or stressful.
Martha has been instrumental in getting me through my separation. Without her, I would be in a very dark place. I cannot thank her enough for helping me, we still have a long way to go but I am optimistic about the future now.
Martha has been a huge help in working towards better self-care, as well as a stronger sense of self-worth. She's respectful and understanding, and very accessible. I would recommend her to any of my family or friends.
Martha is always so great at understanding my concerns and responds in a very timely fashion, especially when she knows my concerns are a little more urgent. I really value the advice and exercises she provides!
Martha Portman was my very first counseling experience, and I am amazed at how willing and eager she to tackle my issues with me. Every response was comprehensive and always kept the progress moving forward. She immediately helped me establish goals for myself, and I look forward to exceeding them. I highly recommend Martha to anyone, you can truly tell she cares for her patients.
I want to share with you how wonderful my experience with BetterHelp has been, particularly with Martha Portman. She and BH have been a true gift to me.

Each session with Martha has a learning that we both agree on, she’s been giving me many insights I didn’t realize before. She’s not judgmental or inconsiderate. I’ve been acting on her advice and I feel much better.
