About me

Welcome.

I don’t know the exact details of what led you to click on this page but I think it’s safe to assume that it is because you are ready for a change. What comes to mind when you hear the word Therapy? Perhaps you don’t know what to think or have some preconceived idea of what it may be. Starting this process can be overwhelming as there is still a lot of stigma regarding experiencing mental health issues and going to therapy. This can leave one feeling so frustrated and lonely. However, taking this step in your life can change your life for the better.

My name is Mary Joe and I am a Bilingual (English & Spanish speaking) Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida and Certified Yoga Instructor. I provide individual, family, and group counseling. My experience is in working with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship issues, addictive behaviors, grief and loss, and abuse and trauma. I use mindfulness I have gained my professional experience by working in a variety of settings including foster homes, outpatient, in-home, and addiction center which has allowed for a broad range of clinical skills.

My approach is one rooted in Holistic Philosophy in order for a client to discover hidden parts of themselves and integrate them in a profound way. I use a person –centered, solution focused, holistic and eclectic approach. This means I tailor treatment modalities to meet your specific needs by looking at the person as a whole rather than just fragmented parts. I combine evidence-based techniques including solution focused therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy. I integrate mindfulness techniques, meditation exercises, and role play scenarios for building skills and meaningful insights. My style can be described as warm and supportive. I will be present and listen to you fully ready to help you with the necessary feedback and guidance to help you tackle your struggles. This isn’t a quick fix, patch it up and be done with it kind of thing. Results don’t come overnight. Therapy success requires consistency, commitment, and investment and if you have these ingredients you will see immeasurable benefits.

I am constantly inspired and moved by the courage, honesty, and vulnerability that I observe with my clients. I am also grateful for the work I get to do with people and be a witness to profound and meaningful change.

I look forward to helping you achieve your goals for therapy!

Mary Joe Rivas, LMHC

Reviews

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Mary-Joe Rivas. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.

I was about to give up on counseling because I didn't feel my other therapists had helped and I was getting discouraged. I would say they played more of a listener role whereas Mary-Joe plays a more active role in actually helping me and guiding me to come up with solutions to my problems. I've made progress in the time I've been working with her that I didn't have while working with someone else for the same amount of time.

She is amazing. She gracefully brought out the dark parts in me and helped me turn those dark things into great things to use for the rest of my life. I am so grateful.

New to being my therapist, but so far very understanding and comforting and helps find material to help me learn more even in my own.

Great counselor that’s helping me deal with my divorce in a healthy way. Teaching me ways to sit and think about everything before reacting.
