Dr. Mary Kurfess

About me

I am a licensed clinical social worker and Board-approved clinical supervisor in Maryland and a licensed independent clinical social worker in the District of Columbia, with 16 years of experience in working with individuals, couples and families with a wide range of concerns, including grief, anxiety, situational depression related to significant life changes; and challenges in marital and family relationships. My clinical experience has been in medical settings, adoption agencies, in an international social service organization, and in public and private social service agencies.
My specialties include research, education and experience with family caregivers of persons with dementia and with post-adoption issues. Therapy with family caregivers addresses their anxiety, depression, and grief related to significant life changes. My experience in post-adoption therapy is extensive, and has included all members of the family constellation in domestic, international, and foster care adoption, including the adopted person, birth parents, adoptive parents, and extended family in both the adoptive family and family of origin. Much of my post-adoption work with adopted persons and birth parents has involved dealing with the uncertainties and emotional upheaval connected with search and reunion.
Those I work with find my therapy style to be warm, collaborative, and empowering. My therapeutic approach draws on client-centered therapy, family systems therapy, attachment-based therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and brief solution-focused therapy.
Reaching out for help in navigating life’s challenges is not easy. I applaud you for your courage in taking this step, and in developing skills and strategies for healing and resolving those challenges. I look forward to working with you!

Dr. Kurfess is an awesome listener. From day one, she's been attentive to hearing me out and encouraging me to share what's on my mind. It's nice having someone who hears me and offers guidance.

Work with me!
