Welcome!
Taking this step to better yourself is the beginning of a journey and the destination is up to you. It takes a great amount of courage to admit to needing help and even more to seek it out. As a therapist, I am a teammate or guide on this journey to who you would like to become. I would like you to get to know me a little and the core principles of my therapy.
I started therapy a little later in life after returning to school following a period of disability. I have a Master's degree in Clinical Counseling. I grew up on the Gulf Coast in Texas, then ventured to Oregon and Colorado for a few years. but now I have returned home to help take care of my father., CO.. Currently, I maintain licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas. I have a passion for helping others and am dedicated to my client's needs. As a therapist, the agency I worked for was involved in helping deal with the recovery of Hurricane Harvey and the Santa Fe, TX school shooting. This experience has increased my awareness and practice using CBT for trauma. Working with anxiety, PTSD, and extensive trauma with clients. I also have worked in the area of self-esteem, confidence, respect, and communication. All are keys to becoming a powerful person.
At the beginning of therapy, I believe there has to be a period of safety, trust, and relationship building. Once this is done the work can begin. I like to work hard and provide my clients with immediate tools and thoughts to improve their world. There needs to be an understanding of the client gets to experience their life and the therapist should respect this by acknowledging they are the expert. The goal of CBT is to help change the distorted or incorrect thoughts in one's life and this will lead to better outcomes. The betterment of one's understanding of themselves leads to a better understanding of the world.
This is a big step to open up to someone and discuss your personal challenges or issues that are occurring. I would like you to know that I am passionate about being positive and thrive to help others. Consider your choice wisely and pick the best fit for you. I am low pressure, laid back, but have a belief in giving life 100%, whatever that looks like for the day. Hope to meet you soon.

I understand that getting to know the patient is critical. However, I feel that this can be done through some sort of short introductory letter that we have the option of filling out before the first session asking why and where my problems may stem from because my story is quite long and I’m not even done explaining it after two sessions.

Talking to Matt is as easy as talking to a friend I’ve known for years. He’s got sound, practical advice, and he’s great at getting me to talk through things without even really realizing I’m doing it. I’ve been meeting with Matt for a couple of months now and I can’t recommend him enough to someone who is looking for a counselor that listens. He isn’t as uptight and unapproachable as some other counselors I’ve had in the past. Very easy to talk to, good listener, and seems like he genuinely cares about your well-being.

I really appreciate Matt, we work through issues I have and if I'm feeling good for the week, and don't have any stressful things I need to talk about, we build our relationship. It is easier for me to open up to therapists/counselors when I get to know them well. The only issues I have with betterhelp is the occasional call drop or lag in the call. Over all a 9/10 for the app and a 10/10 for Matthew.

Matthew was great. I don’t have the time or the opportunity to actually take anything from this.
Maybe some day I will.
Great App!!

Great therapist. Works well with how I operate and think and doesn’t try to overhaul my own way of living life.

Matthew is fantastic. His ability to connect with me and to connect the dots of my various threads is extremely helpful. His experience outside of counselling is also a great asset. He is able to relate to my issues in a manner that is beyond just clinical, but more human and informed by his wealth of experience. Highly recommended.

I was hesitant on starting up counseling but my first appointment with Matthew was reassuring in the fact that he was willing to listen and help me through what I’m dealing with. Through his advice and expertise I’m confident that I can work through the pressure I’m undergoing. I’m confident that our weekly sessions will not only get me through this hard and confusing time in my life but also that I will learn from these challenges and be able to apply what I’ve learned to the rest of my life when I come across other adversities.

Matthew is great. I just started therapy recently. He paces between follow up and allowing me time to work on my own. He is very insightful, and can balance heavy topics with appropriate humor and serious tones as needed. His approach definitely allows me to develop my own muscles so to speak. If you are looking for a therapist that will help you develop and learn skills, as well as provide insight I definetly recommend him.

Matthew is a very experienced and helpful therapist. He quickly understood my needs and gives me techniques to work on. He also creates a safe space in session to just talk about other parts of my life. I feel comfortable speaking to him about things I can’t discuss with other people in my life. He’s down to earth and not overly clinical, this works well for me.

Matt is an excellent counselor. Not only is he extremely competent, he deeply cares about the importance of his work. 6 months ago he helped me button up issues significantly impacting my ability to do work. I returned to betterhelp today much worse for the wear and he cleaned me right up in an hour. Still more to get through, obviously, and I look forward to it. Cannot recommend Matt higher.

Matt has been absolutely amazing to help me work through the process of getting my life back after the end of a 14 year marriage. He is positive, kind, and professional, and he gave me tons of support and ideas that motivated me to make the changes I needed to move forward with my life. I love the way he can always help me mentally "reset", so I am in control of my anxiety and depression. Thanks to the things he has taught me, I feel like I have a more positive outlook on life, more peace, and am actually accomplishing my goals. I definitely recommend him to anyone that wants to get out of their own head and start enjoying all that life has to offer! Thanks, Matt. :)

Written on Mar 19, 2020 after therapy with Matthew for 3 weeks on issues concerning depression, relationship issues, eating disorders, and self esteem
Honestly I was hesitant to start counseling. First step is admitting you need to start talking to someone because you have a problem. Matt has truly given me a new perspective on life. How complex and simply life can be viewed. I love how he challenges me to be a better person, how to turn great habits into a lifestyle, and little tips and tricks to just make life easier. I love how I feel after our sessions because I can vent and Matt will find a way to put it in to perspective to where I can learn something or build on success. I honesty believe I am a better person since meeting Matt. I am excited to continue talking to him and growing as a better human being! Cheers.

Matt has been a caring, invested professional and he's easy to talk to. By invested, I mean he periodically will send a suggestion or idea via the app -- it's clear that he has been thinking about what I'm working on and helping well after our last conversation. And he regularly touches base throughout the week with messaging in the app. Good guy with his heart in the right place.

Mr. Jones is a very affable, gregarious counselor who keeps a good humor about him and demonstrates excellent knowledge of his field. He is sympathetic, understanding and intelligent, and quickly grasps what your needs are. He can provide quick insight into alternate possibilities that could be true instead of your current cognitive distortions and apply both logic and emotion to your current situation. I would highly recommend Mr. Jones as a counselor.

I was really nervous about getting a therapist in the first place and worried that I wouldn't like whoever's I was assigned. Matt has been a huge help just with messaging back and forth and I find his sense of humor alleviating. We're going on about 2 weeks now but so far he's really made a big difference in how I handle certain types of stress and how I view and understand the connections that I make and actively tend to.
I'm feeling like I got pretty lucky for a first draw.
