Matthew Roberts, LMFT
About me
I received my BS from Virginia Tech in Human Development, minoring in psychology, and I received my MS from the University of Kentucky in Family Studies, with emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have 13 years of clinical experience. For the first part of my career, I worked for 6 years in a residential program for boys with severe behavioral and emotional problems. After this, I moved onto a prominent practice for 5 years working with individuals, couples, families, children, and adults. My treatment approach is to form a comfortable relationship with a client first and foremost. Seeking therapy is a big step to take and I want my clients to feel as comfortable as possible with me, feel free to disagree with me, or talk about anything that I've said that bothers them. I like to apply CBT approaches while also emphasizing compassion and support. I am also big on providing education and information to my clients about resources and mental health.
I love to work with people who have anxiety, bipolar disorder, general stress, as well as family, relational, and parenting issues. I also appreciate working on significant life transitions like moves, broadening a social circle, getting a new job, and breaks-ups/separations/divorces. Boundaries are often a part of my work, identifying and setting healthier boundaries with friends, family, coworkers, and in romantic relationship. These are some areas I enjoy focusing on clinically, but I also have a lot of experience working with clients who have oppositional defiant disorder, depression, adjustment disorders, autism, and LGBTQ issues.

We had a bad experience with our first counselor we were matched with but Matthew swooped in to save our Betterhelp experience. He has been amazing!
