About me

I'm a professional psychotherapist providing services to individuals, families and couples. I received a Masters in Social Services (M.S.S.) from Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research in 1995. My chosen focus was Clinical Practice with Individuals, Families and Groups. I received my social work license in 1995 in the state of Pennsylvania. In 2000 I became a private practitioner of psychotherapy and was accepted into the Academy of Certified Social Workers.

My therapeutic style is empathetic and non-judgmental. I seek to understand how it feels to be inside your skin. I am very interested in your story and I spend a lot of time listening and asking questions. Individuals who I see receive "unconditional positive regard" (Carl Rogers) and we work collaboratively to face whatever is causing the experience of unhappiness. I give honest direct feedback with a gentle touch. It's not going to help you if I try to make you like me or if I only tell you what you want to hear. I teach skills to strengthen you. No matter what you are experiencing, you will find relief in therapy. Sometimes, for some people, the most difficult part of therapy is making the decision to seek help.

My approach is based on a combination of professional knowledge, many years of training and experience and my skills in understanding. My training and education are in Attachment Theory, Ego Psychology, Social Learning Theory, Control Theory, Psychodynamic Theory, Systems Theory of Family dysfunction, and the Imago model of Couples Therapy. My therapeutic style combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Therapy, and Dialectic Behavioral Therapy. I have a strong background and interest in Cognitive, Psychodynamic and Developmental Psychology. I'm currently pursuing certification in the practice of Reiki, an ancient practice but a form of a newly emerging field called Energy Psychology. I believe that as long as we live, we can learn and grow.

I have a calling to help people heal. Where there is life, there is always hope. The resiliency of the human spirit is boundless and healing is as unique and as individual as a human being. What is healing for one person may not be for someone else. That is why I individualize my approach to every courageous person who walks through my door. I am always in awe of the incredible amount of human strength and courage it takes to reach out and ask for help.

Melanie Fisher is a true professional. She takes a creative approach to problem solving but doesn't pull any punches. She obviously took time to inform herself about my issues which are somewhat unusual and unique. Melanie also let's you know that she cares about you.

Just started my conversation with Melanie, and so far so good! She is asking the right questions that help me pinpoint my feelings and think about myself differently.

I have been working with Melanie for only a few weeks now, but I already felt a strong connection after reading her first response to me. She is very intelligent, insightful, open, articulate, patient, empathetic, attentive, kind and loving - all of the things I need in my life right now. She is a blessing and I am so grateful to have found her. I immediately felt hopeful and I haven't felt that way for many years.
