Hi! I'm Dr. Melanie Person. I am a licensed mental health counselor in both Idaho and Washington with over 12 years of experience providing therapy to individuals, couples, and families. I love the work that I get to do with my clients and feel so fortunate to have found my life's calling. Through the years, I have witnessed many amazing personal transformations in individuals from all walks of life and all levels of issues. I know that seeing a counselor can be intimidating for some and exciting for others. Regardless of how you view the therapy process, it is important for you to understand that my primary objective is to establish a good working relationship with my clients. It is only through this working relationship that we are able to embark on the journey of self-knowledge and growth. I view my role as a counselor as one of a companion on a journey for self. You, as the client, are in total control of where we go and what the end destination is. It is my job to point out roadblocks and help you remove barriers that pop up on your journey.
I primarily work in private practice settings and am also a professor in a graduate counselor training program, where I get a lot of joy out of training the next generation of counselors. I have experience working with a wide range of client issues including depression, anxiety, relationship and self-esteem issues, and life transitions. Through my private practice, I specialize in treating personality disorders and working with family members of individuals diagnosed with these issues. When working with clients, I approach the relationship collaboratively and work to meet individual goals. I approach counseling from an integrative lens. Primarily, I view many client issues from an existential framework, use person-centered approaches to build relationships, and employ cognitive behavioral tools in the process. I also incorporate postmodern approaches such as solution-focused and narrative therapy as appropriate and have been having a lot of success with acceptance and commitment therapy.
I know it takes a lot of strength to reach out to someone else for help in difficult times. I want to acknowledge the success you have made so far in looking for someone to help you. I am ready to get started when you are!

Consider me a huge Dr Person fan. She knows her stuff and can provide what the client needs. She isn't afraid to tell it like it is and though she doesn't pull punches(metaphorically speaking), she still makes the client feel safe so the punches don't hurt nearly as much as they could hurt.
I’ve been working with Dr. Person for a number of years now, dealing with issues connected to depression, sexual orientation, eating disorders, relationship skills, personality disorders, and spirituality.
She brings a beautiful mixture of compassion and intuition with skills and expertise to each situation and session. I am blessed to have her help as I grow and learn how to navigate myself and life.
Dr. Person is insightful, direct and caring. She has my best interest at heart even when I don’t know what my best interest is. She is helping me and my son deal with the most devastating event in our lives. I am very thankful for her expertise, experience, and friendship.
BetterHelp did an amazing job of paring me with someone that immediately understood the underlying issues that I needed to discuss. There's no way I could've found a more suitable therapist for my specific concerns locally. I appreciate how they were able to match me with Dr Person, who I know genuinely cares and is qualified to address my unique needs.
