Hi! I'm Dr. Melanie Person. I am a licensed mental health counselor in both Idaho and Washington with over 12 years of experience providing therapy to individuals, couples, and families. I love the work that I get to do with my clients and feel so fortunate to have found my life's calling. Through the years, I have witnessed many amazing personal transformations in individuals from all walks of life and all levels of issues. I know that seeing a counselor can be intimidating for some and exciting for others. Regardless of how you view the therapy process, it is important for you to understand that my primary objective is to establish a good working relationship with my clients. It is only through this working relationship that we are able to embark on the journey of self-knowledge and growth. I view my role as a counselor as one of a companion on a journey for self. You, as the client, are in total control of where we go and what the end destination is. It is my job to point out roadblocks and help you remove barriers that pop up on your journey.
I primarily work in private practice settings and am also a professor in a graduate counselor training program, where I get a lot of joy out of training the next generation of counselors. I have experience working with a wide range of client issues including depression, anxiety, relationship and self-esteem issues, and life transitions. Through my private practice, I specialize in treating personality disorders and working with family members of individuals diagnosed with these issues. When working with clients, I approach the relationship collaboratively and work to meet individual goals. I approach counseling from an integrative lens. Primarily, I view many client issues from an existential framework, use person-centered approaches to build relationships, and employ cognitive behavioral tools in the process. I also incorporate postmodern approaches such as solution-focused and narrative therapy as appropriate and have been having a lot of success with acceptance and commitment therapy.
I know it takes a lot of strength to reach out to someone else for help in difficult times. I want to acknowledge the success you have made so far in looking for someone to help you. I am ready to get started when you are!

I also have experience in Addictions, Family conflicts, Grief, Intimacy-related issues, Eating disorders, Parenting issues, Anger management, Self esteem, Bipolar disorder

Almost a year in, and I'm still a difficult client but not as difficult. I think I'm getting better and can finally kinda see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Dr. Person is AMAZING! Her years of experience really shows.
BetterHelp did an amazing job of paring me with someone that immediately understood the underlying issues that I needed to discuss. There's no way I could've found a more suitable therapist for my specific concerns locally. I appreciate how they were able to match me with Dr Person, who I know genuinely cares and is qualified to address my unique needs.
Dr. Person is an exceptional therapist! I don’t know what I’d do without her.
I started seeing Dr. Person when she lived in another state. I had been going to her weekly for quite a while when she told me she was moving to Washington. When she moved she gave me a list of local referrals and I spent a year or so trying to find one that fit me as well as Dr. Person had. I was so happy when I learned I could start counseling with her again on BetterHelp!
I have a diagnosed personality disorder and initial sought out Dr. Person because of experience in that field. I have gained immense insight and support from her over the last few years. She is highly educated AND highly experienced in individual counseling, which don’t always go together! My first session with her I thought she might be too soft spoken for me and I’d run her over with my issues, but I soon learned that while she may speak softly at time, she also can be direct and hit right at the center of everything I was trying to avoid! Haha. It’s a good balance. :)
Counseling doesn’t always take two years and it doesn’t always resolve in a month, but however long someone is able to spend with Dr. Person it will be beneficial. My life would be so different (or not at all) without her services.
