About me

Hello, my name is Melissa Benson MA LCAS LPCS after working for over 25 years in the field of psychology, special education, and counseling, I understand the trust and vulnerability it takes to open up and share your inner feelings and thoughts. I believe today you’ve chosen to find the peace and serenity you have always been looking for? My goal is to help guide and support you through this journey and walk into tranquility. I believe a peaceful journey cannot take place without the recovery of the mind, body and soul. As a Counselor I provide proactive interventions for adults, children and families from a holistic, expressive and eclectic approach. Through these services I help clients to no longer become powerless over their substance use and mental health in order to begin the process of healing and change. Improvement in behavior, family relationships, managing stress, and emotional wellbeing can work if the counseling is successful in an out of the counseling process. Making time to make these changes will take effort, dedication, persistence, and consistency. I believe that change can happen if given the right tools needed for effective and productive change. Through this collaborative relationship, we will work together utilizing various techniques that will ultimately guide you to a place where you are ready to explore, find and become a new you.

I earned a M.A. in Community Counseling from Argosy University/Washington D.C. in 2008. I am currently a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (License #S9254) in North Carolina. I am also currently a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (License #1756). I have currently been counseling for 11 years (October 2008-Present). Prior to going into private practice, I was a MH/SA Care Coordinator Clinician for the Severe and Persistent Mentally Ill Population. I worked in various roles from lead to management helping the homeless obtain housing and linkage to service needs that would enhance their abilities to become productive members of their community. As an LCAS Clinical Counselor for a Day Treatment Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (SAIOP) I worked several years addressing substance use needs in the areas of treatment planning, individual counseling, family counseling, psycho-education, and crisis appointments/services. Before making the decision to obtain my Master’s Degree in Community Counseling I worked approximately 14 years as a Qualified Professional in the field of Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health. I have extensive knowledge in parent training, and working with individuals on the Autism Spectrum. I am currently TEACCH trained through the UNC-CH system. As your Counselor I also utilize other interventions such as singing, music, breathing and mindfulness techniques to enhance the counseling process.

To our future collaboration I say hello, and I’m ready to begin this work with you!
