About me

Hi there! My name is Melissa Yaeger, thank you so much for taking the time to read my profile. I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC) working the state of New Jersey. In 2014 I graduated with honors from Rider University where I earned my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Since graduating I have worked steadily at The Starting Point seeing clients on an individual basis. I have also worked in Collingswood High School as the Student Assistant Coordinator for the last 4 years. During my time there I was able to meet with students individually, but also I worked with them in a group basis for a weekly anxiety group as well as a weekly grief and loss group.
I work mainly with adolescents and young adults who may be struggling in a number of areas. These include depression, anxiety, self-harm, disordered eating, substance misuse, recovery from physical/emotional abuse, coping with changes of life and the processing of grief/loss. More importantly, I am accessible to those who simply just need someone to talk to during a difficult time.
I use a number of approaches when providing counseling services, but my primary approach is that of client-centered therapy. This allows my clients the room to “open up” and share at their own pace. I help to provide an empathetic and compassionate environment which I feel aids my clients in their healing. In this way, I hope to help others work through current and/or future challenging situations and to achieve goals which they create for themselves through the counseling relationship. At times, I do like to incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques. Through this, I hope to help my client’s identity their negative/self-defeating thoughts and learn to replace them with more positive and productive thoughts.
