About me

Hi, I’m Miya, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Portland, OR with over 12 years of experience working with children and families, individual adults and couples. As a social worker, I believe that our mental health is influenced by the systems that we live within and that when we are able to slow down and examine these systems we can often find space for change. My work with clients is rooted in finding self-compassion, motivation, and healing both through clinical methods and through everyday life experiences. I value collaboration and trust, and believe it is my responsibility to be transparent, versatile, and attuned.

I have worked with clients healing from trauma, managing anxiety and depression, navigating a rigid world from a neurodivergent perspective, mending relationships, making big life changes, experiencing stuckness and confusion during challenging stages of development, and many more. I use Internal Family Systems Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and other Cognitive Behavioral techniques, as well as Motivational Interviewing, Collaborative Problem Solving, and skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy. My understanding of the human experience is greatly informed by Family Systems Theory, Trauma-informed Care, theories of human development, and intersectional theories of liberation. Humor, realism, and starting from where you are are are things I have learned over the years to be indispensable to the therapeutic process.

Thanks for taking the time to learn a bit about me, and I hope to have the chance to learn about you, too!

Reviews

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Miya Abbott. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.

I think Miya is amazing. It's a different modality than I've had before so I think I need more coaching of the family systems approach. But, Miya explains it all everytime.. and I live the discourse we have during each session.

Miya is a perfect match for me. I felt a connection with her right away and it felt so easy to open up to her.
