Monae Weathington

About Me

Hello, thanks for taking a moment to get to know me better! My name is Monaé and I am a licensed mental health therapist in Illinois and New York with over 8 years of clinical experience. I have worked in several settings including private practice, hospitals, schools, online support, and community mental health organizations. Throughout my practice, I have worked with diverse populations such as at risk youth, adults, disadvantaged families, and LGBTQ. I specialize in areas of anxiety, crisis counseling, depression, Bi-polar disorder, complex trauma/abuse, anger management, and relational conflicts.

My passion in the helping profession began as I overcame my own personal experience with trauma. I’ve witnessed loved ones struggle with depression and suicidal ideation. I became a Trauma-Informed Yoga Instructor and began combining a more holistic approach to wellness. I also chose to become an active leader and dedicated therapist to further support others in moments and phases when life seems overwhelming. As a person of color, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to find a culturally sensitive therapist. I strive to always create a safe place for those who identify in minority and LGBTQ populations.

I have expertise using evidenced-based models such as Functional Family Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy. In addition, I use solution focused approaches and holistic mindfulness techniques. My therapeutic style is warm and supportive. I create an environment for you to feel comfortable enough to express yourself but challenging enough to help you discover new insights. Building rapport is key to beneficial change and it is something I am very genuine about. I encourage you to share deep thoughts, beliefs, and emotions regarding their concerns. In turn, I listen with an open mind and unconditional positive regard. Together we will set therapeutic goals and work at a pace that is suitable for your growth. I look forward to hearing from you.

Being a bit scared to do this, it took me a while before deciding to use this format as a way to get therapy. So far the customer service and my therapist have been very professional and engaging to make sure that I have been comfortable with this experience. I am put off with talking to people I do not know about my problems, and I have to say that my therapist did a great job in making me feel comfortable and allows me to move at my own pace. I am very grateful to my therapist for everything so far!
