About me

My name is Nancy Harshfield and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Michigan. I earned my Masters of Social Work degree from Wayne State University in 2011. I began my career in hospice, which is where I was introduced to many aspects of mental health, an individuals journey, and the interrelated relationship journey. I understand that a persons emotional fitness and well-being encompasses their physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual journeys, and how the relationship of these aspects are interconnected. Inherently by working in hospice, I have done extensive work with grief and loss, but the thing I learned was at the end of life, all aspects of a persons journey becomes paramount to address. Whether that is depression, anxiety, addiction, family conflict, child and parenting issues, relationship issues, spiritual issues, or any dynamic that the person or family has left unturned, at the end of life these issues need to be addressed as a way for the person to have closure and peace. Wouldn't it be great if we could do this work earlier in life and experience better relationships and a better quality of life before we get to the end. So I commend you for beginning this journey today and having the strength to reach out and begin.

I have been formally trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but understand that most therapeutic relationships consist of a blend of techniques and styles to develop a therapeutic alliance between the clinician and patient. It is important that you trust your therapist and there is a space held that is safe for the patient to open up and be vulnerable. I have additional training from a holistic perspective, looking at the mind-body connection and how your physical and emotional fitness impacts your mental fitness. How does ones activity level, diet, exercise, sleep, and gut health impact their mental wellness. The idea that food is medicine resonates with my practice style.

Other areas of practice have been with auto accident survivors and our Veteran population. The common aspects of these patients is managing PTSD, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and social anxiety. Many of the patients I have worked with have Traumatic Brain Injuries, alongside physical injuries, which impacts their daily life, quality of life, and managing pain as well.

I approach every client as a remarkable and unique individual with different preferences and intervention styles. I will find out what your preferences are and work within your comfort level. We can move slowly or quickly in the process you desire.

I look forward to working with you, and commend you for taking this first step.
