Norma Ortiz de Zarate

About Me

Hey there! I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with 6+ years of experience working with addictions, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, relationship challenges and LGBTQ+ issues. I attended George Washington University and received my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2016. I am now living in Seattle, WA but I spent most of my time in Washington DC working in outpatient substance abuse treatment facilities with individuals who were experiencing chronic mental health issues and have now transitioned fully into the e-counseling world.

I enjoy taking a solutions-focused, strengths-based approach with a CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapeutic) lens to counseling by utilizing empowerment and positive reinforcement to facilitate your journey as you move towards increased self-awareness in the hopes of experiencing personal growth. I believe there's a lot that happens to individuals throughout childhood and into adulthood that impact and shape our beliefs, thoughts, feelings and everyday reactions. Without the help of an outside non-judgmental source, unpacking all of those happenings can seem daunting.

As a therapist, my main focus in sessions is to provide consistent support while holding a safe, welcoming space for you to be able to freely explore and process your thoughts and behavioral patterns that you wish to learn more about. I want to be there for you as you question those long-standing negative self-beliefs you have about yourself and the world that might be influencing the way you see the external world. I want to be by your side as you challenge those false narratives that have been born out of the mental health distress you've experienced to create a new, positive belief system that you can finally feel true fulfillment in as you step into a healthy sense of identity and attachment to your mind, body and soul.

I think it’s extremely important that people feel heard and understood when going through mental health struggles and being able to provide that in an unbiased manner is paramount to me in the therapeutic relationship. I understand how the journey towards self-actualization can sometimes be grueling but you don't have to continue going at this alone. Our thoughts and internal experience creates our present reality, so why not take the power back into your hands?

She is amazing. She listens, she is kind and she is objective with everything. I feel comfortable talking to her and the issues I talk about are very personal for me.

I sincerely appreciate Norma and all the help she has provided me on my journey towards self actualization. I appreciate her goal-orientated technique which holds me accountable and puts into perspective how concrete my growth has been since working with her. She actively listens and asks very thoughtful questions— she makes her intentions clear and succinct and empowers you to know that you are also part of the growth you are achieving. I have seen a tremendous positive change in the way I think and feel about myself after working with her for about 6 months now. I would 100 percent recommend working with her.

Norma is very understanding and nonjudgmental. I feel comfortable chatting with her, and our conversations typically make me feel better. She has helped me figure out how to work toward my goals and also provides encouragement when I might otherwise struggle to find motivation. She also helps me stay accountable to myself for the goals I set in life, and she helps me work through various anxieties.

I got to work with Norma for a brief period. However during that time she was very clear in making sure I led the discussion where I wanted, and still asked me some great questions to help me. She is a calming and giving presence to talk to. I'd recommend folks talk with her.
