I have prior training in dialectical behavioral therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy and have used these approaches to help adolescents, teens, and adults experiencing emotional, psychological, behavioral, and addiction issues. My gentle and introspective approach to therapy helps you gain an understanding of yourself and the connection of your thoughts and behaviors. My experience in residential treatment facilities has helped me have a patient approach to treatment. I believe focusing on taking life one step at a time and being mindful of how thoughts impact behaviors are vital to understanding ourselves. The first step to wellness is an open mind!
Help me help you! Helping someone is like visiting their house. It is hard to know what is inside from one glance. Within this structure, the homeowner knows where everything is stored away. They know if you have to jiggle the handle to the toilet to get it to work or if you have to slam the basement door hard because the hinges are old. Every home has it's quirks and is unique in their way. All houses have a "standard" structure; roof, rooms, floors, doors, windows, etc. The way the resident furnishes it is very different. In my experience with houses, I am confident enough to navigate my way around with time. I may or may not find what I am looking for as fast as someone living in the house, but I'll get there. The same goes when working towards resolving a problem in therapy. A lot of problems "look" the same on the outside. When you open the door it is a different story. I'll never come over unannounced, I only show up when invited. Same goes with helping anyone...I can't change anyone besides myself. It is not something to be forced on another and change is the most successful when the one changing wants to change and has the willingness. Show me what you want to show. Clean up before I come or leave it as is. All I ask is: give me a tour so I know where everything is. You are the expert about yourself. Help me by showing the quirks, and we will get to it faster.
Outside of BetterHelp, I work in private practice Monday-Friday. My private practice hours are 9:00 am - 7:30 pm. I check messages and respond on BetterHelp 1-2x a day 5 days a week (Monday-Friday). I will never go longer than 24 hours to respond unless I am on vacation, in which you will be notified or my schedule will reflect it. You can also book a live session with me ahead of time which I will be open on most Mondays and Fridays to do (sometimes weekends if planned.) Since BetterHelp's method of therapy is a little different than talk therapy, I tend to use worksheets or other resources to help further the discussion when sending messages back and forth. Therapy has its various benefits and uses, BetterHelp is a very different mode of therapy compared to talk therapy in the sense of the frequency of contact and it being mainly online. Many different needs could require different approaches; my approach on here is more focused around conversation, gaining perspective through dialogue, and working together to problem solve any presenting problems that could be improved. I work from a CBT approach which focuses on the connection between our thinking patterns and behavior to ultimately improve the way you feel.
