About me

I see counseling as a journey we take together-you decide where you want to go, and together we will map out how to get there.

I take joy in my work, and consider it my calling. My goal is to become an ally in the process of understanding and change, to educate, and to listen. I have a friendly, curious, positive, and caring approach in my work. I believe that providing therapy is a privilege, and I value the trust that clients have in me. Privacy and confidentiality are of paramount importance. I am non-judgmental and see each person as truly unique.

I'm Penelope Snow. In addition to reading this, you can find out more about me on LinkedIn, at linkedin.com/in/penelopesnow and at onlinetherapyworks.com. To give you some background about me, let me first say I strive to be a highly committed, competent, and compassionate clinician. I've been at this for quite awhile-my professional journey started in 1990, working in the field while also earning a BA degree in Social Work, Summa Cum Laude, from The University of Southern Maine, graduating in 1996. I continued to work in the field while pursuing an MS degree in Clinical Social Work from The University of New England, graduating in 2001. I have been given some wonderful work opportunities which have allowed me to gain a wide range of experience, but I also continue to make a diligent effort to build expertise so that I can offer my clients the most informed, evidence-based techniques in therapy. I'm a single mom with two treat teenagers and I also have a private practice, with my online practice here being a wonderful addition to my work.

I really believe in online counseling, and more and more research shows it to be just as, if not more, effective than traditional, face to face counseling.

We all have a sense of what mental health problems or excessive stress can look like, but how do we know what the opposite of that is, what are we shooting for? Here is what I believe-we can define mental health or good stress management as a combination of things-increased ability to attune to yourself and others in a deeper kind of way, meaning you resonate with others' states and understand what is going on internally for you, and for others, more fully; Increased insight into yourself; You have more empathy for others; Increased ability to manage your emotional states; Better ability to extinguish fear; Better ability to approach rather than withdraw from things; Increased capacity to pause before you act. A kind of spaciousness of mind where you think about your options and choose better options; Better ability to define and live by your values, in a consistent way; Increased access to intuition, which is really gaining access to your body's wisdom; There's a lot of body processes involved too, for example around the heart and around the intestines a lot is connected to how we think and feel, and that is not language based-it's about hearing and listening to 'gut instincts'. When you feel together, mentally strong, and have stress under control you are more satisfied, relaxed, confident, and function better at home, work, school, in the community, and within your personal relationships. Emotions, thinking, behavior, and neurobiological processes combine to create our experiences and determine our level of mental health. Each of these aspects impacts the others, so our experience of life can be shifted by addressing any or all of these so we have lots of options in how we start and make the journey.

Types of therapy I use include Psycho-Education; Stress Management; Mindfulness-Based Practices; Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy; Narrative Therapy; Acceptance and Commitment Therapy; Life Span Development Perspectives; Motivational Interviewing; Trauma-Informed Approaches; DBT Techniques; Brief Solution Focused Therapy; Behavior Modification Techniques; Structural Family Therapy; Play Therapy; Imago Philosophy; Gottman Methods, Psychodynamic/Insight Therapy Techniques, and other treatment modalities. All are powerful tools for mental health, but you decide what works.

If you'd like to explore the landscape of who you are, I'd like to make that journey with you.

Kind regards,
Penelope Snow, LCSW

Penny is the best therapist I've ever had, hands down. She knows just how much she can challenge me and knows what my concerns are. She has different ideas about how to approach concerns and has me try them as much as I can and feel comfortable. When things don't work, she researches other approaches. I highly recommend her to anyone!

Penelope has helped me overcome a difficult period of my life. It felt good to have someone to talk to when I really needed to, and someone who understands how I feel and validates that it's okay to feel this way.
Thanks for all your help!

The work undertaken with Penny has been hugely helpful. I have found her responses to be insightful and relevant and she clearly has much experience and a broad resource base to draw from. Her support has definitely helped me to see my way through a difficult period and feel more in control of my decisions and future. I would recommend Penny to anyone who needs a warm but focused counseling professional.

Penny is such a great counselor. Shas has helped me in many areas of my life and sorting out which areas needed to be focused on first. She is patient and kind and would recommend her to anyone. She is knowledgeable from a real world point of view as well as a wonderful clinician. Penny has opened my eyes to my diagnosis and has helped me understand them better. She concerns herself clinically to what you are going through as well as individually. She has been a great and tremendous help over the last 6 months.
