Hello! Let me tell you about my unique training. I originally completed a freestanding master's degree in Mental Health Counseling, and practiced under a provisional license as a counselor for a while. Eventually, however, with my bent towards brain-behavior relationships, it became clear I would need to pursue a doctoral degree. So I did that, with an emphasis on neuropsychology. I graduated as a counselor in 2007, and with my doctorate (Psy.D.) with an emphasis in neuropsychology in 2012. Just to clarify, neuropsychology is the field focused on brain-behavior relationships; usually this involves cognition (how well your brain is working in terms of thinking, like memory, language skills, attention, things like that,) but it can also have to do with various brain insults and how they affect emotions and behavior.
Because of my background in neuropsychology, I am excellent with medically complicated cases. I know all about seizures, MS, other neurological disorders, sleep disorders, thyroid disorders, you name it. I practiced the past few years with a focus on geriatric neuropsychology, and all the medical complications that go along with that.
I take a flexible perspective on how health behaviors interact with emotion, behavior, and thinking. If doing the "normal" stuff isn't working for you, well, let's work on switching it up and seeing if by changing your health behaviors we can have a positive impact on your life. I'm not afraid to help implement health and dietary interventions like a ketogenic diet if it seems appropriate to the situation.
As you can see, I am passionate about brain health and the interplay of physical and emotional health. Although I can - and have! - worked with clients with a huge variety of issues, cognition and health behaviors are the two areas I'm most passionate about. So if you'd like to try something new and different for your depression - please give me a shout! Feel like there is something other providers have missed, maybe something physically wrong? I'm happy to do a thorough interview and see if anything has been overlooked. Concerned about dementia? I can provide all kinds of education and support for those worries.
