About me

Dr. Cowan is a PhD-level Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, and Distance Certified Counselor, with over 10 years experience within the mental health field. She has experience working in inpatient psychiatric, private practice, residential treatment, integrated care, and foster care/child protective services settings. Prior to opening her own private practice, Dr. Cowan was a professor and assistant program director in the Department of Family Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School and held hospital privileges at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. Due to this, Dr. Cowan has had the opportunity to treat individuals experiencing a variety of acute and chronic health issues including but not limited to: chronic pain, cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, obesity, and end-of-life issues. She is a strong believer in the mind-body connection and understands the emotional impact of disease.

Dr. Cowan is skilled in women's health and the unique issues that may impact their emotional well-being. She has treated women and teens with a variety of concerns including depression and other mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, disordered eating/weight concerns, intimate partner violence/relational issues, work/life balance, and stress. Dr. Cowan collaborates with women in order to develop personal and attainable goals so that balance may be restored in their lives.​

While at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Dr. Cowan was a member of the Senior Care Clinic team where she worked alongside a team of professionals in order to effectively treat geriatric patients with complex medical/psychological issues. Dr. Cowan also completed a year-long continuing education program as a faculty scholar in geriatrics with the Virginia Geriatric Education Center and has worked within a long-term care setting caring for patients with cognitive impairment. She is skilled in working with elders who have been diagnosed with dementia/Alzheimer's Disease and/or other chronic diseases as well as their caregivers. Dr. Cowan also enjoys working with elders who are experiencing issues such as loneliness, grief, depression, and/or anxiety.

Dr. Cowan has been a light on some of my darkest days. She is thoughtful, understanding, and insightful. She listens to my ramblings, asks me tough questions, and helps me overcome mental blocks and personal challenges. Her guidance has been so helpful in helping me maintain a healthy mental state. And, most importantly, I know that she is always there for me. I am so thankful that I have her as my counselor.
