Greetings from the high country of Colorado! Wherever you are, this site is our connection, by email exchanges, telephone, video, or whatever combination you prefer. I'll apply my extensive office experience (nearly 40 years) to tailor my counseling to your needs and personal style, so you will can have confidence in my guidance from the first session. Since every therapist has specialty areas, I'll describe mine here. Let's see if we're a fit.
-- I enjoy working with INDIVIDUALS in a number of areas, including MOOD difficulties, ANXIETY control, SLEEP issues, and ANGER control. That last one is especially common to men, who appreciate my straight-ahead, no hand-holding approach to fixing what's broken.
-- Those in RELATIONSHIPS find I listen closely to both parties, making sure I fully understand each person's needs and frustrations. My role is not that of referee. I need to learn what issues divide you of course, but once the underlying problems are clear, the focus is primarily on feelings--understanding your own, understanding (and honoring) your partner's--because that's where the conflicts arise and the solutions lie.
-- UNRESOLVED ISSUES can mean several things, from early-family conflicts to an unwanted break-up or dysfunctional marriage. While I'm not the Answer Man, I can help you with healthy decision-making and move you through the impasse of internal conflict. Let's unravel that knot, once and for all.
-- Working with TEENS is a challenging but rewarding specialty, whether through individual counseling or as a family unit. Adolescence is rarely smooth, a jungle of conflicting pushes and pulls on the teen and family members alike. I do not treat children under 12, but will consult about parenting older children (10 up).
-- In my online or telephone counseling, I may ask you to complete one or more assessments to help me understand you better, or perhaps send a useful article or worksheet. These can be done online, and will move things along toward the goals we set up.
There are areas I do not treat, among them addictions, eating disorders, gender identity issues, and trauma-specific treatment. If one of these is your primary concern, please pass me by and continue searching for the right therapist for you.

LPC #251 (Expires: 2021-08-01)
Richard helped me during a vulnerable time. He is personable, caring, and empathic which is exactly what I needed at the time. He did not however, placate me and he definitely challenged me to reframe my thoughts--but he did it in a safe manner. I would highly recommend him to all.
