Greetings. Looking for a counselor is an important step. The fact that you are searching is commendable in and of itself. You’re considering opening yourself and your struggles – possibly something you have never done before – to a stranger. Your options are limitless and it may feel a little overwhelming. You want and should have the best counseling for you. Rest assured that all of these counselors from which you can choose are capable, competent, and licensed. All of us have years of education and many more years of experience in some cases. Yet, that does not mean that everyone is necessarily “right” for you. Finding that a counselor is not “right” is no failure of yours or theirs. It simply was not the right fit. So, how can you best determine if you’ve picked the right one? Like any significant relationship, it can take time to decide. Some things you may want to consider in the process is whether or not the experience and education of that counselor match with the particular issue with which you are seeking assistance. Some counselors have areas of focus that they are very skilled in and other areas in which they are not so skilled. You may also consider style differences. Do you prefer more directive and prescriptive counseling or process space to allow you to come to your own conclusions? Finally, and perhaps most importantly, do you feel heard, validated, and supported as you open yourself up? So, as you browse profiles at this moment, you are considering an important question. Please allow me the opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself to help you begin finding the answer.
My name is Robert (Rob) Gould. I am a Missouri Licensed Professional Counselor with a little over 10 years of experience. I have had the privilege to provide counseling for individuals (children, adolescents, adults) couples, and families in various settings including in-home, private practice, hospitals, and correctional institutions. Over the years I have met people from all walks in life just trying to cope with the human condition in the best way possible; addictions, trauma from abuse, relationship difficulties, coping with grief and loss, or even struggling with a significant psychological disorder. My goal is to meet whoever I have the opportunity to counsel exactly where he/she/they are without any preconceived notions or agendas. I wish to validate, listen, and respect the person first – then aid, assist, and support in achieving whatever goal desired. My style is one that can match the individual needs at the time. This is for us to determine as we get to know one another and begin unpacking the complexity of whatever problem brings you to counseling.
It is my intention that if you get paired with me, or choose me as your counselor, that you will be met with warmth and empathy. You are making an important choice to begin living your best life possible and I am glad to have the opportunity to help in whatever way I possibly can.

It was my first time seeking counseling and I didn't know what to expect. I was scared to be so open with a stranger, but it doesn't feel like that with Rob. He is kind and understanding, non-judgemental and easy to talk to. He allows space for you to share and shows genuine interest in what you say. He asks insightful questions and often left me with things to think on until our next session. The best part though about Rob is that he is real. He is honest and will say the things that need to be said and validated so much of what I was experiencing. Thank you Rob for helping me grow, change my life and get to the place I am today.

Robert is personable and very understanding. I didn’t always have the words, but he was patient and helped guide me through my thoughts. With his help, I finally had the language to speak about the things that were troubling me, so that I could work on them.

Sessions with Robert went smoothly. He was quite down to earth and was capable of reading between the lines - which I found helped me open up some. He responds to messages usually within 24 hrs. You need to be able to push yourself and understand what you want from therapy. Robert doesn’t push you - but if you can do that then you’ll likely do well with him as your therapist.

Robert is really awesome and I've loved being able to talk to him and work through things that I was struggling with. He's really understanding and tries his best to help no matter what, even if that just means listening. He's been really awesome throughout this experience and really welcoming throughout the whole experience.

Robert is an outstanding listener, is very insightful, and really helped me to make a key breakthrough at each of our sessions. He asks very good questions to help open up avenues of thought I hadn't considered before. Plus I found he is very down-to-earth and relatable, and he does not overcomplicate things (which I tend to do). I am confident that continuing sessions with him will help me grow and soon find resolution.

Robert felt like a safe place to talk about everything. He didn't or change how he talked to me after talking to him initially. I definitely have nothing bad to say about him. He is insightful and definitely asked the questions that I needed to answer.

Counseling, in my opinion, is such a challenging thing to do. Despite the desire to get help, it is still so hard to face the ugly stuff with all those emotions and having to do that in a company of a stranger - no matter how kind or supportive - is difficult.
This is where Rob gave me the gift of patience and provided me with a safe (s)pace to get through all the insecurities, anxiety, shame and ambivalence linked to the process. I had some trust issues and wrong assumptions about how our work would look like - I thought he would press me into sharing things I didn’t want to share, explain to me what I did wrong or what I should change, act like the expert who has all the answers.. but none of that happened.
What I experienced instead was kindness, understanding and acceptance of however I felt in any moment. I also appreciated Rob’s openness and honesty. He was always transparent about what he saw or thought was happening. During our first interactions he explained the process of counseling to me, the dynamics linked to that, what to expect and also what difficulties could come up along the way. That felt a bit unusual at first, but made me feel included and in control and like this was about me and my goals, not about his agenda.
I appreciated to have my boundaries respected at all times - Rob had a good feel for where I could go and where not and there was no pressure. And I felt like he was grounded enough to be able to deal and help me through whatever may come up, be it an unpleasant inner state, a painful memory or a difficult situation. It has been a truly healing experience to get supported in times when I struggled to endure myself.
This wasn’t my first experience with counseling, but so far the one that really made a difference. I feel like I’m finally moving forward and dealing with my issues and Rob created the space for it. I can’t recommend him highly enough.

I like working with Robert because it feels like a friend with expertise is getting alongside you. He is attentive and reflects back on exactly where I'm at. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder as we do also means that when he senses I am ready to be challenged on something, he will not hesitate to do so and I trust him fully with that which results in much more powerful change.

Rob has been such a peaceful, kind presence in my life. We started meeting together a few weeks before I was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer. He helped me make a lot of progress before my diagnosis, but I’ve been especially thankful for his willingness to walk alongside me through a terrifying season of life. He has been available via video or messaging whenever I need him, even at odd hours. Before I started counseling, I was worried that I wouldn’t know what to say, but Rob is very easygoing and fun to talk to. He strikes a great balance between asking thought-provoking questions and allowing some silence and space to think. I highly recommend meeting with him!

I haven’t been working with betterhelp for a long time as this is my 3rd week I think, and I can tell that Rob cares about my issues and tries to find the best way for me to understand why I’m feeling a certain way, and to help me find relief. He also explains why he’s using certain techniques for therapy as well. I would recommend it to anyone and have shared the app with a few people who I think it would be good for.

I went looking the previous Saturday for a therapist or counsellor as I needed to talk to someone and get advice quickly. After seeing this website, I took a chance and enrolled, at first I was with a few other counsellors but they didn’t work out due to scheduling, that’s when I came across Robert. He was immediately empathetic as he welcomed me and asked if I had used this before, then explained how this worked, and how scheduling worked. That night I was struggling and sent a message to him for advice and he immediately got back to me with tips, and from then he would reply when he could, but mentioned that if I wanted to talk longer could get sessions as he would be able to focus one on one for a longer time. Overall he didn’t judge me, was very clear with his methods and actually cared, as he would check in on me. It was great working with Robert as I definitely needed the chat and we worked on many things in the short period of time, and I feel in a way better position than where I was when I began and needed help. I would definitely recommend Robert as he’s got methods and great advice on ranges of topics, and will try and help as best as he can therefore I will look to work with him when I feel like I need more counseling.
