Slainte (Cheers and Health), as a child I noticed that I always wondered what made people do what they do and say what they say. I remember taking a wrist watch apart back during the days of wind up watches, just to see what made it tick. I grew up in a rural atmosphere and was always very active, including many sports. I performed well in school and wanted to go to college after high school graduation but my family was very poor, so I decided to join the army so that I could earn the GI Bill (after you serve in the military the government would help pay for your college once you left service). I was a Medic in the military concentrating on the behavioral sciences and I counseled soldiers many of whom were recovering from PTSD, panic, depression and anxiety.
When I left the military I attended undergraduate school and double majored in Psychology and Social Work. Once completed, I attended graduate school and earned my Master's and Doctoral degrees in Counseling. during that time I completed the NBCC exam and became a National Board Certified Counselor and a Texas Licensed Professional Counselor. While in graduate school, I worked for years as a counselor for a special services program dedicated to our Micronesian students who attended the university. After graduating with the doctorate I taught counseling at a graduate level Masters program for four years. I then left to become the Clinical Director for an Adult and Dual Diagnosis hospital. I then went on to serve as the Director of Counseling and Testing at a University. Following that I became an Associate Dean of Student Affairs with Counseling as one of my responsibilities and then the Associate Vice President, again with Counseling as one of my responsibilities.
I practiced Counseling for three years in the military prior to my bachelor's degree and 39 years as a licensed and credentialed counselor. I currently hold a Professional Counseling License in the State of Georgia, United States. My practice, includes the following experiences that I would consider my areas of focus during my career: Coping with chronic Illness, PTSD, depression, anxiety and panic disorders, Life span development counseling, Young adult counseling, Crisis counseling, Hypnotherapy, Emotional freedom therapy, Military and veteran counseling, Sports and athlete counseling, Job counseling and Career counseling, I have experience in a variety of treatment modalities including; Client Centered, Psychodynamic, Rational Emotive Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Hypnotherapy, Reality Therapy, Mindfulness Therapy, Meditation and Yoga Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Emotional Freedom Techniques. These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Dr. Robert Mattox. We don’t pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.
I am finding my sessions with Robert extremely helpful!
Dr. Mattox has been incredibly helpful and supportive. He has helped me to be able to rationalize my thoughts and feelings, while helping me feel understood. I thought as a woman, having a male therapist would be difficult, but I did not have that issue with him. I would love to continue working with him, however I am not sure if my insurance will cover BetterHelp and will be taking a break for now.
Great therapist to work with. Always willing to listen to anything and at times gives his perspective.
I would love to continue working with him longer. But due to a new job we are unable to work together due to my new working schedule.
Dr. Mattox helped me a lot in managing my emotions. There is really a difference in my shift of thoughts after therapy with him. I recommend him.
He's very thoughtful and helpful
Dr. Mattox has been crucial to my overall mental well being. He has helped me combat my anxiety and become more balanced in my professional and personal life.
I can't thank him enough for his help and professionalism throughout this process, and I highly recommend him to anyone looking to tackle anxiety and other life challenges. Thank you Dr. Mattox!
