Robin Rutan

About Me

Hi! Be proud of yourself that you’ve decided to engage in the counseling process. Sometimes, just making the decision to do something different is half the battle. You have started taking active steps to improve your life….

I’m Robin and I’ve been providing counseling for over 15 years. For the past ten, I’ve been working at a residential treatment facility, where I provide intensive clinical services to teenagers who have co-occurring disorders. Their complex trauma symptoms display as high-risk behaviors such as self-harm, promiscuity, substance use, eating issues, relationship instability, emotional dysregulation and conduct reactivity. I also facilitate family therapy and provide supportive counseling to parents who are struggling due to their children’s mental health challenges or disruptive behaviors. In the past, I was also employed as a therapist at a couple of inpatient substance abuse treatment facilities. I worked in both the adult and adolescent units.

I attended The Ohio State University and graduated with my Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work. I obtained my Master of Education in Allied Professionals Degree from the University of Dayton. I utilize a variety of clinical approaches when I practice including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Integrated Family and Systems Theory.

I incorporate art, writing, journaling, music and other homework assignments in counseling. I have found that it is more important to focus on client strengths than be problem focused and choose to work collaboratively with you in order to help you bring about positive change. My goal is and go at your pace.

Working with challenging individuals and coping with ongoing crisis ridden situations has taught me the importance of validating others’ feelings, identifying their behavioral patterns, how to build rapport quickly, and other skills such as thinking outside of the box and developing creative, trauma-informed interventions.

I have been very happy with Robin. She makes me feel very comfortable, listens to everything I have to say and offers up not only her point of view but also additional resources from other professionals who deal with what I’m struggling with. She is very accommodating with her time and scheduling and always replies within a day to my messages. I’m thankful she was assigned to me.
