Shanan Spencer

About Me

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Maryland with over 10 years of experience working as a counselor and clinical director. I have worked with a wide variety of clients in clinical, private practice, college, and church settings. My experience includes working with clients with depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, addiction, grief and loss, marital and relationship difficulties, and trauma. I also have experience working with the LGBTQ community.

My counseling style is warm, welcoming, and supportive. I believe that counseling is a trusted partnership and that everyone must be treated with respect, sensitivity, and compassion. My approach combines cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, emotionally focused, psychodynamic, and rational-emotive counseling. Our work together will be designed based upon your specific needs, goals, and comfort level. I generally check and respond to my email once per week day. I avoid weekends so I can focus on my family. My scheduled availability is limited, but I am flexible, so please ask if you have special scheduling requests.

It takes courage to seek for a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps towards a change. If you are ready to take that step I am here to support and empower you.

I look forward to working with you!

Very kind, approachable and doesn’t tell me just what I want to hear.

Shanan's been doing a great job helping me get through this pretty big rough patch. When one approach stops working, she does a great job with helping me transition to another.

Very open to my concerns and works to define and isolate the challenges I am facing. I believe she provides validation of my feelings and tries to uncover the sources and thus the interventions.

Shanan Spencer is just a great therapist. She allows her clients to vent as much as needed and still find solutions to their struggles. I have learned quite a bit about myself since working with her and told her things that I could not tell others. I always feel safe and like I am in good hands.

Shanan's been very insightful, even when she doesn't say much. She asks questions that drive me into my soul to think about things I haven't thought about for a long time.

Shanan is a good listener, and I really appreciate all the time she takes to talk to me and offer advice. It is really nice to know I have a place I can go to "vent" whenever I need to, and that she will actually listen. Also, it is nice to have an outsider's perspective to situations I am dealing with, and hear her advice on how I might better deal with the situations.
