About me

A common question I receive is “Can people really change?” The answer is absolutely, people can change! While it may be convenient to accept the assumption that people can’t change, it is far from true. People can change and we do it every day. With every conscious moment we are all presented with new information that may result in us affirming what we already know and believe or that gives rise to a change in our psyche. We live in a world where if we don’t see change immediately we dismiss it as not happening. Often others give up on us and we give up on ourselves because we have become accustomed to immediate results and we give up too quickly, not realizing or remembering that real change starts in our minds. Like a planted seed, we don’t see the change right away but it’s happening.

As a therapist, I help to facilitate change processes that lead to emotional health. My therapeutic approach is rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Theory, which is a model of therapy that focuses on changing unhealthy thought patterns, beliefs and behaviors. I also borrow tools from psychodynamic, ACT, DBT and other approaches, depending on your unique situaion. My overall approach to therapy is pretty simple - to not only help you now but to give you the tools you need to be your own therapist. I have experience working with clients who are dealing with a wide range of issues, including hoarding, depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief and loss, relationship issues, attachment issues, procrastination, control, anger and a host of others.

What I believe,,,,
• We all have the capacity to make evolutionary and revolutionary changes in our lives.
• Emotional intelligence is a key indicator of well being and it is attainable.
• Emotional health is just as important to our functionality as physical health.
• Emotional and mental check ups are just as important as physical check ups, if not more so.
• Optimal and long lasting change is the result of learning, applying and sharing new skills and repeating and refining the process.

I look forward to working with you!

She’s very good as a therapist. She listens diligently while providing productive feedback about issues we discuss. She always makes me feel comfortable even when I’m complete distress and don’t even know the words to say. Thank you so much!

I am new to therapy. I have tried in person therapy before and felt stuck with therapists that I did not connect with, but I did not know how to change that. I since then have realized that a person of color was a better match for me. I feel confident that I will learn important tools with Shavon and feel comfortable when I open up to her. I feel better understood when speaking to her than I have in the past.
