Therapy is an opportunity to have a safe space that you can build in your life where you can be seen, heard, and validated by a warm, empathetic, non-judgemental third-party. At the start of therapy, you may feel stuck or frustrated in any or multiple parts of your life. You may lack close relationships, struggle with establishing work/life balance, or desire to develop emotional coping skills.
I am passionate about working with adults through these challenges that may be introduced via life transitions, relationship issues, grief and loss, trauma, anxiety and depression, and substance use. Our time together will be spent gaining a deeper understanding of the origin of these struggles coupled with developing new coping skills to foster growth and help you regain agency in your life.
I use various different types of tools to enhance therapy. For example, I use drama therapy techniques for clients to address their issues directly or have a conversation with a different version of themselves. I use writing and journaling to deepen client insight. I also incorporate breathing and physical movements for centering and grounding. I also feel that I bring my sense of humor into the room and that sharing laughs is just as valuable to healing as sharing a space for tears.
We know you are benefiting from therapy when, you notice you’re more compassionate with yourself, your body feels less tense, and you are more confident to self-soothe and problem solve in your daily life.
I have my Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling (M.S.Ed) from Fordham University in New York City, with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Social Welfare from Seattle University in Seattle, Washington. I am a New York State Licensed Mental Health Counselor, currently working in private practice in the Flatiron District of Manhattan. Previous to this work, I was the Intake Specialist and later Team Leader at Harlem Bay Network PROS, an outpatient mental health clinic in Harlem. Most of my work is rooted in helping adults with severe mental illness, substance use, and trauma recovery. I have also worked with military veterans, high school students, artists, couples, and members of the LGBTQ+ population.

Shelby is amazing! I feel completely comfortable sharing with her, and we have worked through some things I never thought I'd talk about with anyone. Each week I look forward to our sessions. Getting matched with Shelby on BetterHelp has truly been life changing for me.
I’ve been working with Shelby for a couple months, and already I feel completely comfortable and very happy with our sessions. I’ve had so many “a-ha” moments with Shelby and she really helps me work through everything. I’m always excited to have our sessions because I know that it will be good every time. Shelby is very welcoming, open, and she makes me feel super validated. Highly recommend!!!
Shelby is an amazing counselor. She helped me get through the toughest things and I am so grateful to have been paired with such a great person! Not only did she help me through the tough things, gave me a nice push when I needed to be better, but also made me laugh. She is what a true counselor should be at Better Help.
I highly recommend Shelby as a counselor. She is very attentive, direct, and a great listener. She provides insightful dialogue in each session, and it allows you to really dig deep into your actions and ways of thinking. She is also very responsive in between sessions and provides great worksheets that have really helped with my anxiety and way of thinking.
BetterHelp and specifically Shelby are absolutely amazing! From our first session, she made me feel incredibly comfortable talking to her. After several years and different therapists, she is the first one I have felt truly myself around and have shared things with her I've never discussed in therapy before because of the safe space she's provided me.
