We all struggle sometimes and while family and friends may want to help, they may not have the tools you need to make the changes, solve the problems, or make the decisions you are facing. Having someone to talk to who is unbiased and non-judgmental can be most useful when we face barriers to our hopes and dreams.
I have about 10 years of diverse experience including trauma, substance abuse treatment, and domestic violence counseling and advocacy. I approach each client with an open mind and an open heart. My counseling style is warm, nurturing, and client-centered. I believe each person is the “expert” on themselves and it is my role to help them find the tools that will assist them to their goals. My clinical “toolbox” is crammed full of interventions from many different counseling models including mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and narrative therapy because not one approach will work for every individual. I am a certified Mental Health Provider with the American Diabetes Association as well as Seeking Safety, Mindfulness, and Domestic and Sexual Violence Advocacy and Counseling.
My own journey to counseling has been a long and winding road, going back to school at the age of 50 after a successful culinary career. I graduated top of my class with a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from University of Bridgeport. I am currently licensed as an LPC in the state of CT and am able to work with residents of CT only. In addition to a comprehensive education, I bring a wealth of life experience to the therapy room. I have been through marriage, divorce, parenting challenges, personal loss, and so much more. My passion is helping my clients find their direction in life, and I am humbled to walk with them as they discover their life path. I look forward to working with you as you begin your own journey.

Shirley is skilled and compassionate and honors my goals and needs expertly. I look forward to our time together and feel like she has improved my life in so many ways - even in areas I hadn't expected. Thank you Shirley, I owe you a debt I cannot repay!
Shirley has been really a wonderful therapist. She is kind, empathic, and supportive. I enjoy working with her.
I was not sure what I would be getting with the better help.com experience. I had recently had difficulty with a therapist who seemed to have some memory difficulties, which was both awkward and alarming. I was worried about being matched with a therapist who could both be sensitive to LGBTQ issues and my current crisis carrying for my elderly parents. Shirley has fit the bill on all issues in this tumultuous time. It has been a huge relief to have some help setting boundaries and affirmation for self- care. I have been much calmer.
Well it is 740 in the morning, so here we go:
I have been with this program for a short time, and Shirley is my first therapist ever. That said, I really do appreciate the amount of work Shirley has done to help navigate me through my mental disparity.
I use to bottle up whatever annoyed me, to sort of "grin and bear it" because I didn't want to be "over emotional" or "dramatic". Due to a certain professional change in my life, I ended up losing that "ability" to hold it in, and would lash out when I felt wronged. This resulted in strained relationships and situations, and Shirley is helping me how to handle these emotions better.
I do feel bad because there have been times I have been inconsistent in keeping up with the therapy (I am easily distracted and forgetful at times), but I do keep in mind of any information that Shirley has given me.
Shirley is really kind, compassionate and straight-forward. She is exactly who I didn’t know I needed in a therapist.
I've had several sessions with Shirley and I really do feel that counseling is helping. I didn't realize how many factors were influencing and causing my anxiety, and working with Shirley has shown me that it's not all just "in my head". I was hesitant to start counseling online as I've never tried counseling in-person before, but I love the flexibility and different options to communicate. I'm really looking forward to continuing.
Shirley is definitely someone I look forward to talking to every week and someone who has helped me get through a really hard time in a relationship specificially. She checks in and is genuinely trying to help with your problems as well as meeting your needs as a client. She is very open-minded and is just great all around with people. Will definitely recommend to someone else in need of a therapist.
I’ve been extremely pleased with my experience thus far. My sessions have been helpful and interactive and Shirley has provided helpful resources to work with as well. She’s been extremely responsive and compassionate.
I’ve only worked with Shirley for a few days before realizing she was the right match for my needs. She responds to my messages fairly quick, offers great feedback and very flexible with her scheduling. I also enjoy her laid back personality and sense of humor. I highly recommend her as a counselor.
Shirley has been outstanding. Extremely relatable. Makes you feel like you’re not alone. She offers great techniques to help cope with anxiety and to sleep. I’d recommend her to anyone dealing with anxiety or panic issues. She’s wonderful!
Shirley is wonderful! You can tell she’s genuinely working with you to reach your goals. The fact that this is online makes it a lot easier to regularly attend sessions when I can just open up my laptop. It’s great 10/10!
Ms. Shirley, from the beginning understood what my main concerns was. She allowed me to voice my thoughts and opinions. Most of all she just listened to what I had to say.
Shirley is wonderful. When she talks, it’s like speaking to an experienced wise friend. She does not tell me what to do but helps guide me to find an answer. Very supportive and kind.
