Dr. Sonya Bruner

About Me

Deciding to seek help takes courage and strength. I believe that you have the capacity to change and grow throughout the course of your life. I have been successful in helping people develop skills to address current difficulties, process past experiences, and overcome anxiety about the future. You have the capacity to get "unstuck", and learn how to live fully in the present moment.

I employ an integrative approach to treatment based on the needs of the individual. My therapeutic approach is heavily based on the widely researched and evidence based cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapy, with a strong focus on teaching mindfulness skills. I have worked successfully with many clients on issues related to phase of life stress, resilient identity transformation, gender and sexuality issues, and relationship and communication problems.

I look forward to helping you overcome your difficulties and live the full and rewarding life you deserve.

I have a B.A. in psychology from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York.
I subsequently earned an M.S. and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University New England, and completed two years of supervised training.

Following my post-doctoral training, I entered private practice and expanded my clinical focus to include work with adults with a variety of presenting problems, including anxiety, depression, and trauma, in addition to relational and family issues. Currently, I provide online counseling to adults through a HIPPAA compliant, secure website.

I firmly believe that psychotherapy necessitates flexibility of approach and interventions in order to appropriately serve clients. I have a strong
interest and background in applying principles of dialectical and cognitive-behavioral therapy in treatment, including teaching mindfulness strategies. I have an ongoing interest in working with clients on issues related to trauma survival and recovery, phase of life stress and resilient identity transformation, women's issues, relationship issues and communication, and positive parenting.

Went through several psychs before I found someone who grasped what I was struggling with, was able to figure out a lot of answers and remove a lot of obstacles. It feels good to be able to see through the fog.

Sonya was absolutely wonderful. She listened and understood what I was going through, asked questions that allowed me to express the challenges, and provided insights and clarification on how I was handling the situation that made me feel incredibly reassured and empowered. I recommend her to anyone and everyone going through difficult situations.

Very quick responses, great online "bedside manner" and her focus on how to change thinking and behaviors (CBT) was a perfect match for my needs.

Dr. Bruner has done a fantastic job of helping me through some of my darkest days.
