Starr Baldwin , LCMHC
About me
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in North Carolina with over 28 years experience in counseling. I have worked with individuals with a vast array of concerns including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, OCD, specific phobias, dementia, schizophrenia, PTSD, all types of abuse, relationship issues and parenting issues. I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings and have been able to develop therapeutic relationships with clients in multiple developmental stages.
My theoretical orientation is Cognitive Behavioral, meaning that I believe that our emotions and behaviors are often caused or derived by one's thoughts. Once a client identifies a displeasing behavior, changing one's thoughts can assist with changing one's feelings and behaviors that follow. I also utilize Solution-focused Therapy, whereby counseling is goal-oriented and focused on the present and future circumstances. However, I always have a unique approach with each client because I individualize my approach based on one's needs.
My counseling style is inviting and comforting. I have a nonjudgmental compassionate nature. I strongly value the quality of relationships with others and naturally place a tremendous emphasis on the professional relationship in the therapeutic setting. I hold a strength-based perspective whereby I focus on the client's viewpoint and believe that the client holds the key to his/her progress, whereby my role is to appropriately facilitate that progress. Trust and safety are important factors in the therapeutic process since they allow the disclosure and effort necessary for the change process to begin. Change is not easy. It requires ongoing participation through the willingness to practice thought and lifestyle modification that often feels uncomfortable at first. However, clients are never expected to do anything in counseling that is not reached by mutual agreement. This is a process of working together toward the attainment of your goals, not my goals. You are the key and I'm simply the facilitator. I'm confident that we can become a strong team and I look forward to working with you!

I've only been working with Starr for a few weeks, but it's really nice to have someone there to listen to what's going on in your life and know they aren't judging you. I feel comfortable talking to her and knowing she is actively listening to me and helping me through what's going on.
